Metinka Slater leaving KCCI?

They showed her family on air at noon. Her husband seemed really thrilled about being there....not. Their oldest son is going to ISU in the fall. Their daughter is like a junior in high school. I remember hearing that their youngest boy a freshman in high school was supposedly really good in archery. Holy smokes! I didn't realize she was that short though.

Those hours would kinda suck even though she did the noon and weekend morning weather. The KCCI scene has really done a complete turnover in the last 5 years or so. I like how WHO-TV has the commercials about the years of experience of everyone, pretty much leaves KCCI in the dust anymore.
Yeah I was happy to be there. Little sad though.

Anytime you leave a job on your own accord is tough. Done it twice, a 12 year job and a 14 year job. The best thing is she that she is leaving on her own. The thing I miss most about both are the people I worked with everyday! Some are retired now, others have left for other jobs and a few others are still around.

My wife just left her job here recently after 20 years. She was really torn about doing it but there comes a point in one's life when its time you just need to make a change.

Best of luck in her new endeavors!

Wish her and the family the best!

I grew up with us as a family basically only watching KCCI for all news/weather and have stuck to that to this day. They've always had great tech, relatable people (for the most part), and seemed to be the most "modern". I know WHO has probably caught up as a lot of those advantages were in the 90s and 00s, but sad to see one of the last recognizable person (and genuinely good person) leave.

I've had the good fortune to interact with her and her family occasionally over the last 13 years. Both of our oldest boys attended the same pre-school class and we would engage in small talk while waiting for class to be over. While they attended different elementary schools, they ended up in the same social circles in middle school through high school. Both have been in archery together for some time and are graduating this year.

I wish her nothing but the best in her new job and I'm excited for her and the family to not be beholden to the fickle nature of Iowa weather, well at least no more than the rest of us.

Same. I refuse to watch WHO. Occasionally watch WOI.

You know what's really sad? When so many of these news, sports, and weather personalities are all of the sudden younger than you are. :(

Yep, I think more and more broadcasters are starting to do that. I'm sure those hours (either super early or late) can be tough.

If you're in the media it basically has to be your one true passion. It's long, abnormal working hours, high stress, and unless you've made it to the highest levels of the profession it doesn't pay well. Her being a meteorologist, though, I'm sure she did better than the typical journalist in terms of pay. I wrote for the Daily for two semesters, which was enough for me to know being a reporter was something I did not want to do for a living, neither for print nor electronic media (which is why I went for the visual communication route, which I've turned into a nice career with the government).

Really hope wherever she lands, she enjoys it at least as much as I'm sure she did her weather gig.

I can't imagine working those hours. Would be really tough with kids, one would think.
She probably hasn’t slept more than four hours at a time for years. But she was always my favorite and I loved when she would give the forecast at the Jack.

It is surprising the number of opportunities there are with a meteorological background, especially in things like high tech and defense.

Yes. 100% her decision. Between the hours and our son’s weekend baseball travel, it was time to be normal again.
Good for you two! I’ve pretty much always worked a standard schedule but the lady friend manages a restaurant. I don’t know how people work those crazy schedules.

Agreed. I saw something recently where the personalities are coming in at around 2-3AM and the producers are in at like 1 for the morning crew. That would suck to do long term. It has to take a toll.
