I know this has been discussed before but I just moved from an apartment (where I was paying $50 for cable+internet) to a house. A Mediacom guy had to come over to "turn on" the Mediacom service.

My last statement (Dec. had a no balance) which I assumed was because I was moving?

I just got my January bill and it was $220! How do I go from a $0 balance on Dec. 18 to a $220 bill on Jan. 4?!

I did notice they charged me $59 to "turn on" the cable at my new house. I also believe the promotional package I used to receive expired.

My question: Can I get Mediacom to remove the $59 install charge and get me back to the promotional rate? If not, I'm switching to Direct or Dish tonight. I will call Mediacom at lunch (and will probably be on hold the entire time) but will I be wasting my time???

CR area residents.

There's a rumor floating around that if you go into Mediacom before the end of the day today (the Sinclair deadline) you can get a 20% discount of your bill for the next 4 months & a free set of rabbit ears.

anyone out there know if this is true?
 
I know if you go to www.befairsinclair.com, you can give them your mailing address, and they will send you a free pair of bunny ears. I got a set, and they are pretty nice. I bought a pair at Target for tailgating this year, and the ones they send you are pretty similar to the ones that cost me $15. Plus they give you a converter box to switch back and forth between the antena and cable.
 
IMO:

if you are not a satellite fan (i am) and what to continue with MC and would like FOX. Consider going HD OTA (OverTheAir) by picking up an antenna and a mid size LCD TV. It may be too much for some, but free locals that are in HD is sweet. and you may be able to spread the cost out over a year.

Otherwise do what ISUFan or myself have done, go satellite (myself DISH).

I have had Dishnetwork for about 2 years and have found it is way better bang for the buck than mediacom.

You can get a "ClubDish" referal card from someone who already has dishnetwork and can get free install ($50 value) + $50 credit on first bill+ other promotional stuff.

I think I pay $35/month for top 60 channels plus local channels.

Let me know if you want a "ClubDish" Card and I'll hook you up.
 
It's said that in year 2007 we are talking about using rabbit ears in order to get a channel when we have the modern technologies of HDTV, sattalite, and cable TV. If I still had Mediacom I'd be calling to ask for a reduction in rate for losing a major network like FOX on my channel lineup. Thankfully I switched to Dish Network and got away from that crappy cable company that basically could do what they want since there are no other cable providers in this market. Let someone like ComCast or Time Warner come in and I bet you that Mediacom would have to stop screwing everyone over and actually lower their rates to stay competitive.

Funny thing is this is not just Iowa Mediacom either. I was in Illinois the other week and the FOX station there is owned by Sinclair and Mediacom was running a similar banner at the bottom of the screen like they do here.

Yes, Mediacom is providing free rabbit ears - got ours yesterday.

We're doing the HD thing at the end of the month as well. In order to get locals in HD, you need to have an HD antenna as the DSM are is not set to have HD locals via the DirecTV service until the end of '07. I bought an HD antenna online for $40 - saved about $15-$20 by going online rather than in a store - including the shipping costs.

Another nice thing about DirecTV, we have an extra cable box. I plan to locate an extra dish too and when we tailgate, I may take the dish/box/small TV with us to catch other games a few times. I won't need to pay extra for the box, as I'll borrow an active card from one of the rooms in our house and put it in our "portable" box for the day. :)+

The only negative thing I've heard about DISH Network is their packages. If you want a basic cable package via satellite, they make sense. If you want the large number of channels, they may not. DISH bases their packages off of like 60 channels, then 100 or so, then around 160-180. DirecTV has all the 180 channels in the basic package, other packages for movie channels, etc.

I switched to Dish this spring and echo your thoughts. While I am actually paying a little more since I upgraded my lineup over what I had for Mediacom I still get a better "bang for the buck." I had extended basic and internet with mediacom and I think my total bill was about $95 with them. Well my Dish bill is about $70 and Qwest DSL about $31 till the 1 year promotional runs out on the internet but with Dish I now have 180 Channels on 4 TVs, 2 which have DVR. So I would say that's about the same thing as having Mediacom Digital Cable with the DVR option which I did check on price once and I believe that was around $100 total for the TV portion alone (basic extended + digital cable price + dvr price.) You see those commercials on how their "promotion" for digital cable is like $29.99, well that is on top of what you pay for basic extended already.

I couldnt find anything about 20% off of your bill for the next 4 months but if somebody does please post it.

A coworker told me it was an "unadvertised promotion" his wife was told about when she went in to the Mediacom office this morning to cancel. Several other people around the office have told me they've "heard something similar"

I may go over lunch just to make sure I don't miss out on anything.

Mediacom sucks, but basically I want cable internet & ESPN, I think I pay $98 a month for both and don't think I can get it much cheaper with any sort of dish - specifically because I like the hspd internet

When they were originally going to lose KGAN 2 months ago, I went in to get my free Rabbit Ears. Not only did I get my free Rabbit Ears, but I also got 20% off my basic cable package for the next six months and also got my internet for $9.95 for the next six months.

I would say that if you went in and told them you knew they were giving it away that cheap, they would almost have to give it to you....
 
I just called in to Mediacom (didn't even have to go to the office) and they did give me 20% off the bill for the next 4 months. So if you argue for it they should give it to you.
