According to Disney’s Sunday note, the big-budget Marvel tentpole grossed more than $60 million on Disney+ Premier Access — subscribers had to pay an extra $30 to watch Black Widow — while debuting to a pandemic-era best $80 million at the domestic box office and $78.8 million overseas for a global theatrical bow of $158.8 million. The Disney+ portion made up a hefty 27 percent of the total $218.8 million opening.

I'm sure Disney is going to wait to see if Jungle Cruise performs as well on Premier Access (I doubt it) but this appears like Premier Access/Video on Demand isn't likely to go away any time soon.

Pressure is now on Warner Bros if they are going to disclose HBO Max viewership when The Suicide Squad launches next month.

They also don't have to share that 60 million from premier access viewing on Disney+ with anybody. Straight to the bottom line. You can bet they aren't walking anything back at all.

Over 25% of its opening is staggering to me. I would have thought that once the pandemic scare died down, that number would drop to something closer to 10%. It'll be interesting to see if that is the new normal. That's gotta hit the AMCs of the world right in the pocketbook.

I would have to think that will shorten the number of weeks they can run in theaters, too.

The movie theater industry is being forced out of its comfort zone and will need to keep adapting to make up for the loss of market share. Since I may only go to 3-6 movies a year, I can't say a dollar or two hike in ticket price would sway me from enjoying the theater. However, theaters are going to have to figure out how to hang onto larger families and the younger demographic with less disposable income.

My family of 4:

- $10/ticket
- 3 medium popcorns, 3 medium drinks, a small slushy and some skittles

Approximately $100 to see this in the theater.

Now…we don’t go to movies that much, but that’s incredible considering I could have done the same thing for less than half the cost. Granted, I have a smaller screen and my sound system isn’t as good, but…

It's extremely significant.

With the cost of larger tvs going down and people's entertainment funds bursting from lack of use, I think many people upgraded their home viewing experience this past year. Mine is ok for what I need, but If I had two or more younger kids, I'd seriously consider upgrading and going the premier access route.

I'm morbidly curious to see the evolution that needs to take place for theaters if this trend continues. They were pretty stagnant for a long time with a monopoly on new movie viewership.

Better seating, reserved seating, cleaner lobbies, better sound, dine-in theaters, multiple viewing options (3D, larger screens, etc) were all new innovations mostly designed at competing with other theater chains.

This is a whole new enemy for them.

I have an awesome setup at my house. I love watching movies here. But for me, it's Tuesdays: 5.00 each for the family of 5, 1.00 popcorns, and one large drink the kids share. Probably about 35.00.

Tuesday deals are 100% the way to go for families

Here's the thing - the demand is never coming back to the way it was. Never. It's been flagging for 20 years anyway and streaming/COVID basically changed it completely. People talk about Endgame making a cool billion and that's nice but we used to have heaps of all different kinds of movies making good money. Comedies, Rom-Coms, dramas, all of these used to make serious money at the theater. Sometimes they can still hit (Crazy Rich Asians or something) but it's incredibly rare.

Movies also used to be at the center of culture. The Oscars were one of the biggest nights of the year. 57 million people watched the Oscars in 1998. In 2018 it was 26 million. I'm not counting this year it was a very weird one. 26 million is still a big number but it's not nearly what it was.

There will be less movie theaters and they'll make less money at the box office. But there is still a place for them and movies will still be big business.

I was listening to a podcast today discussing Loki where they had many of the same likes and frustrations as me with the series so far, but they also brought up a good point. More so than any of the other MCU series so far, Loki's success or not REALLY hinges on this upcoming finale. I can't say the same for the other two series as much. Whether you are liking Loki so far or not, everyone inevitably has the question of "what is the point of all this????", which has yet to be answered. If they answer that question well in the upcoming finale, I think it could at least satisfy most of us somewhat naysayers enough to keep us pretty tame. However, if they don't answer it well enough, they could be at risk of frustrating everyone, even the big fans of the series thus far. I guess we will find out soon enough.

I was pondering whether to watch the Loki finale earlier than my usual 9PM day of release, when I realized something. It’s already had a second season announced, right? So you know darn well they’ll end it on a cliffhanger. Sigh.

By the way, did anybody else notice that…
when that box of Reality Stones got pruned, they would have dropped into the Void with all the other stuff, like the TVA’s dinner trays? Probably just laying there on the ground.

I haven't seen that a season 2 is confirmed anywhere. It's just a widely-discussed possibility among fans.

I just finished the final episode and honestly I loved it. This is the only Disney+ Marvel series I've really actually enjoyed start to finish.

I can see this final episode being very divisive. I think some people will hate it. I absolutely loved it. I'm going to leave this completely spoiler free and I implore you, STAY OFF ANYTHING THAT WILL SPOIL THIS FINAL EPISODE FOR YOU. If you care about that sort of thing there are actually some huge reveals in this that relate to the wider MCU.

A completely spoiler free comment from this show is that I really loved two things about it. Casting was fantastic and the score by Natalie Holt was great and really set the tone well. I think this show was a resounding success.

Loved the final episode. Agree with the post above try to go into the finale free from spoilers. I thought Loki was the best Marvel Disney + show.

That divisive comment has me scared now. Then again, based on how things were set up leading into the finale, I guess I never did work out in my head an outcome that likely wouldn't be divisive, no matter how hard I treid. We'll see though. I always like to hope for the best and keep an open mind. I have been surprised before.

I almost fell into the spoiler trap, but Twitter hid actual posts down the page and I got out before I started to scroll.
