Linebacker Injury Status?

It sure doesn't sound like any of the main LBs will be back. I think it was a positive that Cael was back for a bit on Saturday and another week to heal would be a good thing.
Was Bacon still on crutches on Saturday? If he's been off his leg for 6 weeks now I think it's fair to assume Campbell's been downplaying a season ending injury. Additionally, despite all the downplaying of the Brahmer situation -- I won't be convinced that he also isn't dealing with a long-term injury. Crutches and a full leg immobilizing brace doesn't get handed out for just a "tweak". I'd love to see them both contribute, but not sure either of them at 75% is better than their respective back ups.

does anyone have the video of Bacon's injury?

6 weeks in a brace and crutches could be a fibular fracture + tightrope or a meniscal repair, the two most likely with "lower leg injury" has me leaning towards fibular fracture + tightrope.

Straight leg brace and crutches absolutely could be a tweak. Non operative LCL and MCL would be a straight leg brace, would be a brace for pain and stability while they wait on an MRI.

How is CMC saying that Caleb is out for the season “downplaying” it?

It’s McLaughlin he said might be back before the end of the season.

Somehow people keep saying that he’s definitely out for the season when immediately after the injury Campbell said he could return later in the season.

Doesn’t mean he will, but he definitely said Bacon could potentially make his way back. Personally I’d think regular season is out of the question, but perhaps Big 12 championship game or beyond time timeframe.

What was McLaughlin’s injury exactly? Also I thought Barnes did pretty well, close to the top in terms of number of tackles again and I believe a couple of those were for a loss.

They must really like Barnes at Mike because they had Brezina playing a lot of SAM (instead of Mike) when he was in.

I just thought that was add because Brezina was doing really well at Mike before his injury.

Also the running teams that we are facing all have fast running QBs. I would rather have a chance of a LB trying to beat a quick QB to the edge than an additional Dlineman.

I flip flop on ISU being a 3-3-5 team all the time. It's hard to argue with Heacock's results over his tenure at ISU. When he was at Toledo they did play a 4-2-5, so he should have a good grasp if it could benefit ISU, if even as an alternative.

The 3-3-5 has been a very effective pass & run defense. It's hard to argue the terrific pass defense results so far:
  • 3rd nationally in YPA
  • 7th in YPC
  • 3rd in pass completion %
  • 1st in Opponent Passer Rating

But at some point this season, I feel we will need to get pressure on a QB to win a game.
  • Rushing four 260lb+ DT/DE's would provide a more physical match-up against opposing OL's. If we had LB's who were great pass rushers, I might feel differently. But it seems like our LB's struggle to get sacks when they blitz. Through 7 games we only have 9 sacks (Singleton: 3, Snyder: 2 plus Petersen, Ezeogu Ebel, Klosterman at 1 each). The Clones currently rank 120+ in sack %.
  • IMO a 3 man rush creates pretty big windows for a QB to scan the secondary. And it creates big lanes for a scrambling QB. Bringing 4 big lineman could obstuct a QB's vision and force a scrambling QB to go wide where LB's and DB's can support.

You would know better than most…things I wouldn’t even think of…but is it possible it’s that Barnes isn’t great in coverage against the tight end?

I sat next to Brahmers dad and grandfather on Saturday. They said it is an MCL injury, severity unknown at the time.

I think Cael’s more athletic and they feel better with his speed and knowledge of the position to put him out there. The Mike can generally focus on the run in our defense and doesn’t deal with as much pass coverage.

Heacock has done a great job. At first I figured that LB was the last position we could take losses at. The more I thought about it, it’s probably the best position for us to get injured. It’s was/is our weakest position at the start of the year. When you have an average group, the drop off isnt as large as when you replace a group as good as our secondary with 3 rd stringers. Our Dline and secondary are still fairly intact so that allows them to carry the LBers.

I guess that’s better than an ACL. Isn’t that like 6 weeks? Pending the severity of it. If a strain, then maybe a few weeks less?

I literally listened to Campbell say he was out for the season, several days after the injury.

It's best to just assume anyone with an injury is out for the season and be pleasantly surprised if they return.

Grade 2, partial MCL would usually be a straight leg brace for 4-6 weeks, then full return. However, if its a grade 1, just a stretch, not a tear, could be back in 4 weeks or less.
