I believe the combine allows one step into the jump. If you see someone's vertical listed in the mid 30's or 40's you can bet it's not a true standing vertical. That one step makes a huge difference. I think the NBA combine typically tests both ways.

In that article they ask him how long he thinks he'd stay at Iowa State. Said one and done isn't a need. Two or three was his answer.
