Funny how the media just assumes that AL would even want to talk to them after a big game or whatever. That's why the phrase is: MEDIA OBLIGATIONS. Randy Peterson was talking this morning on GheyxNo like the only thing Lazard would be thinking about the entire Iowa game was how great it would be to have an interview or his name in a POS newspaper that no one reads after making a big play. The Iowa media are generally a bunch of pompous hacks that could never cut it anywhere else. Although very nice people I'm sure.

Let's see if I understand this...

Media weasels don't like it that media weasels get no access.

Hmmm. Next you'll tell me alcoholics don't like living in a dry county.

I have a hard time accepting that AL has the "option" to decide if he "wants" to speak with the media. Dontcha all think it would be controlled by coach?

PS: who is Rico Gafford?

Way up there
College kids (and high school) should have no obligation to speak to the media. If you're a pro and get paid, thats part of your job. If college players want to talk to the media, then great but it shouldn't be an expectation.

There will be plenty of sound bites for outside media to use from AL from the inside media questions by Eric/John. I don't see CPR changing his stance mid-season or for a particular game. Heck... CPR may also be including the inside media.... which I am also fine with.

And the point made about Fry when he was at Iowa, is spot on. The 'media' is bigger these days and ISU doesn't need the Rag as much as they used to.

You know you're getting owned in a twitter fight when you resort to HS championships.

Allen could have really owned him by stating that Rico transferred to that squad for his senior year...glad he didn't stoop that low.

Someone else did it for him after Rico said "#TeamFirst", which I thought was pretty funny.

I thought the media outrage about this was really amusing. Generally I like Murph & Andy, but they were flipping out about this yesterday. The only people who care at all are the media.

As long as I get to watch Lazard on Saturdays, I couldn't care less if he stands at the podium after the game to talk to you so that you can write your column or host your show the next day.

Fans won't have a problem with this, only some media types. I'm also pretty confident, although I can't be sure, that CPR did not do this without discussing it first with AL. Maybe after talking to him, CPR got the impression the guy just needed a break from the media hype as well as for the other reasons CPR may have had, so this is what he did.

Too bad ISU doesn't have their own television channel or radio programming to let the fans hear from AL if he has a big game, etc. Oh wait, they do. Media may be off limits, but I bet John Walters, Erik Heft, etc. are not off-limits.
True, but you left out the obvious exception - Samantha Ponder.

Can we get a poll added to this thread to see what people care and what don't? I really wonder what percentage of people are actually disappointed by this. It was funny listening to KXNO yesterday and hearing them all tell us how devastated we should be. Man did they sound self-important. They seem to think they provide us with critical information by interviewing players and having them tell us how hard they played and how great the week of practice was.

No problem with it. I'm sure Allen is sick of the scrutiny and 24/7 attention and constant hounding. I see him around a little bit-seems like a very modest guy-kind of low key personality not seen much in guys with the national ranking and opportunities he has. He's patient with the attention he receives in being sort of a local celebrity. Would guess he told PR a while ago that he couldn't wait for it to end. As time passes and the weariness wears off, he will be made available. Will be good too. He is very articulate and will be a great representative of the program.

I have a huge problem with it. How else will he be able to deliver the smack down to big12 and hawk corners Richard Sherman style if he cant speak to the press.

Yesterday I tuned into KXNO and wow did the guys on both afternoon shows have huge problems with Lazard being off limits to the media for his first year. Their reaction was such that a listener might have thought Lazard was off limits for his whole career at ISU. They all kept repeating that they didn't care from their side of things, but that it was the fans and especially those in central Iowa that were going to hurt because of this. They kept asking what about when he scores his first touchdown, has a big game or the winning TD grab against Iowa? How can fans be kept from hearing from him?

I'm a big Cyclone fan and I could care less if Lazard was available to speak to the media or not for one year. They're plenty of other characters on the football team to keep us entertained for the whole season. Lazard is well composed for a kid his age and I don't think he would ever cause a stir for ISU. The kid has been hounded for the last year and always talked with the media who constantly questioned him about his ISU commitment and the radio guys said that he never seemed mad or frustrated with the media over this. I go back to Lazard just being well composed. I think that its a great move to keep him off limits because it allows him to focus on football and becoming a great teammate. Iowa keeps freshmen off limits

Its pretty clear that it was the radio and media guys that are going to hurt because of this, not the fans. Its all about readers or listeners for them and a Lazard interview would be great for their business. It was just annoying/funny to hear them spend an entire segment about this when they kept saying they didn't care.
They talk more about lazard than the actual game. They do not like to be told no and sent to the corner for a timeout.

I wonder if this media ban for Lazard wasn't requested by the guy himself? He's probably rather sick and tired of media folks.
