Lard looks good

there was another video of them walking out to practice and Lard and Young were walking side-by-side and Lard clearly looked taller, probably by a couple inches.

They both have good-looking 3pt shots for big guys, but I think Lard's looks better. It's really smooth and effortless.

I think he has it in him to be legit scorer but it's just not his role right now.

Today would not be the day for him to start jacking up 3's, although he's more than capable of it.

Definitely. If he's consistently 8 and 8 for us this year we're going to be tough to beat.

Not to be "that guy" but it's warmups. I'm not anti-Lard, but it's warmups.

No inside scoop on Jakolby Long since he's been practicing all year BUT in the summer his jump shoot was broken. Terrible form, slow weird release. His teammates would giggle and turn away when he would shoot and when Monte played him he would yell "He with us!" every time Long shot a 3. Bricked all but 1 or 2 out of 10.

Not saying he can't be good. He's athletic, good defender, etc (i.e looks the part). But IMO he has a ways to go offensively, particularly if we are expecting him to provide 3 point shoot.
It's fascinating because he shot a decent percentage in high school while being able to get his shot over future DI players, but what I have seen of his shooting form (pre-February), he's got such a low release, he looks like wouldn't be able to get many shots off. I'd guess fixing his shot is main thing that kept him from getting more spot minutes in non-con. Hopefully Prohm can coach it; we knew Fred could.

It's still broken...at least visually. It's got a weird hitch. I literally don't understand how that happens these days.

It's a very entertaining clip, and it's good to see the team seems to be pretty loose, but I wouldn't take anything at all from those clips about how good of a basketball player Lard is. Youtube clips of actual games would give you a lot more info.

Probably 90% of guys in college basketball that are as tall as Lard will be able to do exactly what he's doing in those practice clips. He's just throwing down uncontested dunks and hitting a few 15 foot jumpers.

I am really excited about having him and Young the next 3 years together though. Add in Wigginton and Lewis, and a Weiler-Babb, who I think is going to take his game to the next level now that he'll be "the man", and I think we'll have a very fun team to watch at least.

Tough to say if they'll be good enough to make the NCAA's next year, that might be too much to ask, but it will be exciting to watch these guys all develop.

A shots a shot. He shot that way in high school and scored with the best in the nation.

A jumper is like a baseball or golf swing, its preffered to have the best form possible. But, if you work at something long and hard enough it doesn't matter the form as long as it starts going in. I've seen some broken shots in my day, and his is not great but not atrocious. I think the biggest thing for his shot is that he needs to rise up more, get off the ground a bit more and he has the ability to make more shots, easier for himself.

I do. At least at my local school, nobody teaches these kids how to shoot properly. They just let them shoot however they want when they're young, and by the time they get to HS they don't want to mess with it at that point.

It drives me nuts to see all these kids that have no idea how to shoot. I think part of the problem is kids jacking up 3's at an age where they don't have the strength to get the ball to the hoop, so they have to resort to horrible form in order to do so.

Having said all this, there are lots of examples out there of great shooters with poor technique. Lonzo Ball has terrible form, but it works.

In the case of my local high school team, most have horrible form, and none of them can hit the broad side of a barn.

Fred didn't coach form as much as he recruited it and coached confidence.

You must not be familiar with other bigs we've brought in the past 7 years.

Not trying to be that guy as I too am excited to see what Lard can become next year, but if you watch Simeon Carter, he's dunking just like that in warm ups too. Same with Ray.
True with Ray, but your eye for basketball is bad if you don't notice the difference between Lard and Carter.

I hope he's aggressive around the rim and throws down in games. The only thing the drives me nuts about Deonte still is he still gets cute around the rim a lot. More WVU posterizing, less reverse layups!

I don't disagree with the premise here, but I might disagree with some of the rest.

In the video, Lard at least looks the part. Quick, athletic, aggressive and maybe more importantly, coordinated.

A lot of kids his age, at that size, don't have those attributes until they develope more. Some never have them.

I realize it's a video in a non-competitive warm up, but still. Looks good. I'll say, he looks bigger than I thought he was.

I think Carter has confidence issues inside the lines. Coordination issues too. Just my opinion, and I don't want to rail on him too hard, because he seems like a really good, positive teammate.
