Lanning

He's the next in a long line of promising qbs we've had that will end up getting benched. Jantz, Barnett, Richardson, Rohach, and now Lanning.
He was never a promising QB. I've watched him since he was in middle school. There's a reason the other teams that offered him did so at other positions.

I think tonight showed that he doesn't have it mentally to be the QB. He made some great throws but also some of the most boneheaded plays too.

The last interception sealed it for me. There is absolutely no excuse for that one.

Ya I think Rhoads planned on recruiting over him, but it never actually happened.

Lanning was really bad tonight. I'm sure he'll start against Iowa, but I would think Campbell will have to have a very short leash on him in that game.

That safety was just a horrific play by Lanning. He made a couple decent deep throws, but that was about it. His read option plays were not even good. He usually made the wrong read and handed it off when he should have kept it and vice versa.

He wasn't the only problem, we got destroyed in the trenches on both sides of the ball too. That never helps.

People on here make me laugh... last year you're all calling for Joel to play over Sam and now looky here, one game in and he's awful and shouldn't be on the field.

The backup QB is always the most popular guy on the team for you guys. Get a hold of yourselves and give this 21 year old kid, learning his 4th (!!!) offense in 4 years, a damn chance.

I don't know if the backup can do better but I do know that Lanning made mistakes that were inexcusable for freshmen. It was awful.

Fumbled snap, easy fix.
Safety - OLine couldn't block anyone.
Miscommunication with Trevor Ryen on the first INT, easy fix.
Final INT was bad but it gets hectic during desperation time.

So overall, I would say the last INT was the only "inexcusable" turnover. Before the final 2 drives, he was 17-25 for 235 yards and 3 TDs. Don't forget the first 3 1/2 quarters when judging someones performance.

Terrible - I was a JL fan but that was pathetic. No running game made things even worse - he is not a passing qb and it showed. Team was bad - inept - whatever you want to call it - this staff is in over their heads and have zero clue. TO at half that takes 3 off board and puts up 7. 12 men on field penalty - screen passes to nowhere. Same old BS - thought Mangino was calling plays again.

The QB is the obvious position to pin things on when things go bad, but it is truly lazy in this case. There were loads of things that were pathetic in this game and to act as if Lanning was the difference is shear nonsense. The last interception was awful but the first one wasn't on him and neither was the fumbled snap. On the safety, what the hell was he supposed to do when he was instantly getting tackled from his blind side right when he got the snap? Not to mention he had some fantastic throws that we haven't seen made in years.

Was Lanning an asset today. Probably not, but he wasn't anywhere near the liability people are making him out to. Yes there are reasons we lost. Don't take the easy way out and pin it all on the QB.

The fumble is inexcusable. Easy fix but it shouldn't need to be fixed. The safety wasn't really an issue. For the first interception I don't know which one was right but you can't have that so whichever one needs to figure it out. Plus I thought it was Lazard. The last interception was just absolutely inexcusable. That's the one that really did it for me. The inability to know what to do there was just awful.

Then he all around just didn't play that great. He had some nice throws but there wasn't anything special. I think that was more the receivers.
