Kyle Stephenson -- South Tama

From what I have heard, the kid is very coachable.. he has great leg drive, and will find, like I did and many RB's who come into Division 1, is that you find yourself running alittle lower... lol.... I remember an All-Big Ten lineman at IOWA ... scary dude... alway laughed at me when I walked by him ... finally ... one day I asked him why he was always laughing at me... all he said was, " High and Mighty " .... " High and Mighty " meaning... get your butt lower when you run or you will be cut in 2.... Never knew that until the hits I took my Freshman year... then, it did not take long for that to click... LOL

Here's a bit of nostalgia for you, the following picture was taken at the 1971 Sun Bowl. The guy with the back of his head toward the camera was Keith's Dad and the other guy is his brother. I still remember Keith's Dad having tears of joy when Keith scored a touchdown right about where the "U" in LSU is. Great times! Good story about Buddy also!

I was at that game. Frankly I can't remember where I was sitting. It was exciting to be attending Iowa State's first ever bowl game.

Too bad for ISU they dont have room for Kyle.Dont think he can walk on.Their loss. UNI was interested.Hope that they land him.Kyle will help any team he plays for.Whoever gets him will probably get first chance at his young cousin(8th grader) who plays for Grinnell.Running back. And great wrestler as well.Jake Simon. Remember that name. Will light up the state of Iowa in high school.

I've long though school "hatred" is a fans thing. After most ISU-Iowa football games that I recall, the players are highly respectful of one another. It is the fans on both sides who are obnoxious.

Could it be the warriors who lay it down on the field, who battle one another with all they have, develop a high regard for one another because such a struggle fosters a sort of comradeship? (I dislike war metaphors applied to sport, but they have a certain powerful ability clearly illustrate a point, so, maybe football competition in its own way is sorta like Union-Confederate troops who often admired one another because of their mutual struggles and years later held joint reunions).

And the fans, we sit on our butts and watch. We are only a peripheral part of the game, we cannot truly expend our energy in a way that intimately connects us to the struggle on the field of play. We scream, we holler, and since we are spectators, we despise the other side's spectators because they are a mirror image of ourselves. Yet, the other side and our side do not directly engage, there's no way through a personal struggle to achieve respect for one another.

Ok, I'm rambling, mulling the question over out loud. Sorry.

You have to understand ... when I was in 9th grade, I went to IOWA STATE to a football camp ...the next 3 years, I went ... Earle Bruce and his staff knew me very well, so I knew Iowa State.... many of the players.. Old time stars O spent time with ...fun time too... Got to meet great like Matt Blair... Mike Stahahn.. Brad Storm... Dave McCurry... on and on... Keith Krepfle and I were at the Eagles together and he was a great guy ... I was in awe because I grew up seeing him play.. When we first spoke, I told him of how I knew Iowa State and many of his generation players, and he was amazed at what I knew..even him knowing I played at Iowa and not ISU. I think we all forget, even though, we have to play that darn game each year, there is a great amount of respect from the players .. I am not sure how many of my Iowa players felt , but I enjoyed the test... and playing against many of my friends.. ISU was one of a few bowl teams then.. Now .. too many bowls to remember. I really like the ISU coach as he is much like Ferentz.. they are both class acts and I look for Paul to be there for a long long time and leave on his terms.. In the meanwhile, bring ISU great success.. Thank you for the kind words... All the best, Jon Lazar 44 / Iowa Captain 78

I was trying to find something today ... His coach was my teammate at STC.. I will write him, and ask him .. we do chat on email... I will then report what I hear ok.. Thanks ... Jon Lazar

I went to school with Kyle's parents and saw a Facebook post yesterday that he will be going to Iowa Western, so there's potential to see him in the future since that pipeline has started.

Jon, i like your stories of the past and glad to hear the respect (at least yours) of the rival that was and still is. I'm sure there are a lot of stories that go untold as well, I guess I could always ask my dad (your old HS coach) to share some of those. I had the pleasure of meeting up with you a time or two at Iowa games after your time but was unfortunately to young to have as much fun as you guys did.

Hope all is well!

I see Iowa Western didn't offer him. I wonder if they saw a flaw in his game that was holding him back. I didn't think there was but those coaches seem to know what they're doing down there. It will be nice to see him get a couple years of juco ball under him and come here and make an impact

I spoke to his coach yesterday and Kyle is going to a Junior College for a year .... it is one in Iowa... Not Iowa Falls... but I thought he said Council bluffs .... Then, hope to be picked up by a D-1 school at that point. Jon

Yep,Kyle signed with Iowa Western JC.Think a good move for him. Think he will do well there.Hardworker, good student. He will be playing for someone in the state before long.
