Kyle Stephenson -- South Tama

Interesting that Jon Lazar, former Hawkeye Running Back is pushing for Kyle Stephenson to get a scholarship to ISU. Iowa has zero RB's committed. And have RB problems that we are all aware of.

At this point we do not have a schollie for Kyle. But a preferred walk-on status is available I am sure.

No... it is me... Jon Lazar .... I came across this thread while looking at his Youtube video and highlight tape... I like ISU football, as I do IOWA, and am all for Kyle getting a good look by any good school... I am for this kid and wish him the best ..... I have a deep respect for my ISU friends, and former players; Terry Rubley, The late Dexter Green.... Pat Kennedy, Mike Stensrued, Tom Randall, Mark Settles.... to name a few ~ Great guys and great players who gave alot to ISU. I am just for this kid and he cannot go wrong going to ISU ... Jon Lazar 44

Stormin.... to be honest , with all the things happening over the years at RB at Iowa, I would like to see him go to where he wants.. If it is ISU, great... I am for a South Tama kid doing well... I do not have a dog in this fight other than wanting this kid to do well....

Hard to tell .... Iowa, a this point could use any RB that can walk a straight path and stay on campus.. Not sure why that is so darn tough to do AAUUMMM.... I thought it was what I was supposed to do when I played there .. Go to class, go to practice, play the game .. I just do not understand those types of issues.. I know we had fun, but I do not recall getting in trouble and letting my team and fans down.. Be it an IOWA or ISU player, I would hope that these kids have a good head on their shoulders and can make that decision between right and wrong ... Hard for me to accept as I was able to do it ... and I almost lost my leg my Freshman year.. I could have folded the tents right then and there... Jon Lazar 44

Clonehenge ! You are so right... I loved the fact that he could have merely gone to the corner in the endzone, instead, nailing the last guy .... that was great .... loved that ... tells alot about a players FIRE inside... when you see that , that is a player you want ... alittle nasty... I have seen so many players that looked nasty that backed down after the first shot to the chops .... then you owned them.. It is the players that fight, and are like Kyle you want.. Jon Lazar 44

MY HISTORY WITH IOWA STATE; in 9th grade I went to the Johnny Majors football camps.. then the next 3 years to the Earle Bruce camps.. Today, I still keep in touch with the guy who recruited me.. Keith Kephart. We still talk alot... I will see him soon. Also talk to Matt Blair who also recruited me with Keith....

I remember Earle Bruce coming to my house at 7 AM to sign me in Tama.. It seems like yesterday. I did sign my letter with ISU which eliminated Nebraska. Anyway, I have history with ISU and I really like Rhodes as the coach ... I love his style ! Jon Lazar 44

Hey, I would love to get Kyle Stephenson to become a Cyclone. But it will have to be as a preferred walk-on at this time. We have 23 commits. We do not have a schollie for him. The precious few we have left are not available to Kyle. As a college player you likely understand the numbers game and the allocation of scholarships.

I would Love for Kyle to walk-on and earn a scholarship.......just like Jeff Woody did.

Swirling.... it is me ... Jon Lazar... ran into this post.. all for South Tama kid getting a shot period.

Coach could certainly offer him a grayshirt.

That's quite an impressive history with ISU!!

Jon, was John Harty a captain on the '78 team? He's a big deal where I grew up (I went to the same grade school as John)...and Heelan. Nice to have an actual Hawk on the board.

Mr. Lazar,

It is very cool to see you on this site! I was at Ankeny when you played at South Tama and you were one amazing player! I'd never seen a player dominate and strike as much fear in the opponent as you did. You were the definition of toughness! Thank you for giving some love to the Cyclones!

This is what is called "good sportsmanship", a quality that doesn't seem to be taught these days. Thanks, Jon.

Funny ... just spoke to John not too long ago .... 78 was my last year, then I was off trying to make the Dallas Cowboy's roster then the Eagles... I then came back to finish my degree, but I think John was a captain in 81... I would have to look at the archives but not really sure ... John was a tough player.. he started as a freshman. Well....... I think there is a bad wrap given to the respect level that Iowa and Iowa State players have for one another ... I don't know.. maybe I am different as I had players I looked up to all along at ISU growing up .. Actually, I was in Camp with the Eagles and their Tight End was ISU great Keith Kreple ... I thought he was a god seeing his highlight reels at ISU..Then, I am lining up with him on Offense... What I was saying is that there is a great amount of respect and class between players.. I remember Buddy Hardeman coming to Iowa City and I bought him drinks for his table all night... Buddy was great and we have a great deal of respect for one another.. Maybe an inside look at how it really is ..... Jon Lazar 44

Well, Thank you ! We had very hard hitting games... I mean tough and on edge games... We were just a little town coming to Des Moines playing Ankeny... Glad to see Pezzetti getting that State Championship.. during my senior year, I hit one of their players hard on your sideline... Jerry yelled at me, and I gave him the F-Bomb.. Always felt bad about that until I called him and apologized 32 years later..... I had to... it always bothered me that I did that.. he was gracious and we have a half hour chat.. Good man !

Here's a bit of nostalgia for you, the following picture was taken at the 1971 Sun Bowl. The guy with the back of his head toward the camera was Keith's Dad and the other guy is his brother. I still remember Keith's Dad having tears of joy when Keith scored a touchdown right about where the "U" in LSU is. Great times! Good story about Buddy also!

You will love this .... the summer before the first Iowa - Iowa State game renew game in 76, I had pressure on me to do well and I know many of the ISU players were wanting to kick my butt for going to Iowa... My friend , Mark Erickson was from Mason City, went to High school with Tom Randall.. Well, we went to a party and there was Tom Randall, and Mark Settles a linebacker.. woo wee, did I feel uncomfortable, but I knew Tom so we had a good conversation and then met Mark with he telling me he was a starting linebacker.. I knew we would meet again ... lol .... it was a nice night... no blood shed as it would have been mine... lol ... Then one night in Ames ran into Ron McFarland... Sugar Bear ... we had a great conversation but knew he too was going to be after me .... a week before the game , I started getting letters... as if it were from Tom Boskey and a few others telling me they were going to break my leg etc. I knew that was not from them.. they were too class of an act to send that... and also to be stupid enough to **** me off... lol.... anyway, I should have saved the letters.. they were classics....

Great to see JL posting on here. As a STC and ISU alum who played with both he and Mark Fetter I would have loved to see both playing for ISU. Both are class guys and if Jon states the kid can play I would believe it. I'm old enough to remeber how Nebraska used to always find the in-state hard nose guys that became true diamonds in the rough. CPR made that kind of move on Knott IMHO.
