NFL: Kansas City Chiefs Thread

I don’t understand why this keeps coming up. He’s not retiring in Mahomes prime unless he medically has to.
You never know. I personally don't think he will but sometimes it can surprise people. I'm old enough to be surprised when Bill Walsh "retired" (and had Joe Montana) then got bored and went to Stanford.

Will be interesting to see what the Chiefs do in the offseason with some of the players. Clark, Hardman, JuJu, Brown, Jr, Thornhill. I wonder if Chiefs try to renegotiate a deal with Clark that would lower his salary?

Clark's only something like $9 million in dead cap if they cut him. Chris Jones I think needs extended to lower his cap hit and keep him on the team longer. Brown Jr. is the big question mark to me. Do they just tag him again and draft a replacement or lock him up long term?

Thornhill may be expendable with the rookie DBs performing well. JuJu they don't necessarily need to re-sign, but I wouldn't be too upset if he comes back on another short term deal.

Interesting article on the Athletic on how truly great Mahomes has been explaining how other QBs who won early in their career, Montana and Brady, had great defenses while the Chiefs have at best been average under Mahomes.
Said that no other QBs that have received as little support from the defense over the last ten years have won a SB. He has one something like 67% of games he has started where the team finishes with a negative EPA. 39-19.

Here is the free agency list for the Chiefs, 22 players in all: 2023 NFL Free Agents Tracker | Spotrac

Of the biggest names there I think Hardman is gone as Chiefs probably can't afford to pay him what he probably will get elsewhere.
Brown is a big question as dod you take him again or either find a long term deal or let him walk.
Henne already announced he will retire so signing a capable veteran backup QB will be on the shopping list now.
I'd like to see McKinnon back again but he probably earned a bigger role and paycheck elsewhere
Dunlap and Nnadi were good contributors on the DL but not sure what their market might look like

WR Watson may be able to retain him on a cheap deal but the market will dictate if they can work out a deal with JuJu probably so WR could be another position that has some turnover. When you win a Super Bowl some of these guys that played bigger roles probably will be seeking bigger deals on the market so will depend on if the Chiefs think they can replace them through the draft, internally, or a cheaper option on the free agent market. They have drafted well the past few years so if they keep doing that it will allow them to maybe splurge a bit on 1 position somewhere. Frank Clark's contract could free up a lot of money if they could get him to take a paycut or just cut him to take the cap savings.

I honestly wouldn't hate Bridgewater or Brissett.

I was listening to Nick Athan on KXNO and he brought up Justin Ross. I forgot about him and he can be a great piece if he ever gets healthy. They held him on their roster this year for a reason.

The most excited aspect of this off-season for me is knowing that Brett Veach (the best drafter in the NFL right now) has 11 draft picks to work with this year. The Chiefs had 10 rookies play in the Super Bowl and 9 of them were draft picks. Unbelievalbe!!!

I’m guessing Steve Buschele (sp) will be back up next yr.
I would sure hope not, he hasn't taken a snap in an NFL game yet. Shouldn't be too hard to find a veteran with some previous starting experience that doesn't mind holding a clipboard and having a shot of winning a championship. Chiefs roster is built to win now and I don't see them taking that risk of having an inexpirienced QB behind Mahomes who couldn't be a capable starter if the unthinkable happened and he is out for an extended period of time. Henne had several seasons of being the starter on some crummy teams but was a capable game manager the few times they had to use him. I just don't see the Chiefs using an unproven backup QB as their insurance plan if something were to happen to Mahomes so I would expect them to find a cheap veteran backup they would be comfortable with.

I’m not too worried about QB with Reid as coach. He knows what he’s doing and how to make a QB look the best they can.

Saw a great stat on NFL Live that the three teams with the most rookie snaps during the season were the Bears, the Texans and the Chiefs. The Bears and Texans are drafting 1 and 2, the Chiefs just won the Super Bowl.

Chiefs must like him. Kept him on the active roster all year to ensure he didn’t get snapped up off of waivers. He showed some talent in the preseason.

Quick notes (IMO) on all of them:
OBJr - All about salary. I don't love him but it could be so much worse than him.
JuJu - About same as OBJr. Don't love him, don't hate him. Does he want paid or want to win?
Dunlap - He can walk. There will be another cap casualty cut to fit his role.
Nnadi - Would love to keep. Underrated.
Henne - Enjoy retirement!
R Jones - Goodbye.
M Burton - Meh. Didn't use him much this year.
B Bell - Was here, left and came back. Will he leave again or stay? I bet he stays.
McKinnon - Would love to keep. McKinnon and Pacheco are a perfect combo.
Hardman - Is someone really going to pay him?? I just don't see it. I bet he's back on a prove it deal.
Bush - He can walk or stay at a very affordable price. Indifferent.
Thornhill - Would like to see him stay as the young vet with all of the really young talent.
Watson - Great depth option. Wouldn't hate keeping him.
Saunders - Bowling ball. Great personality too. Keep.
Townsend - He's going to get paid. Probably highest paid punter contract ever?
Wharton - Meh.
Fortson - I bet he stays.
Buechele - New QB2?
Wanogho - Bye.
Allegretti - Love the versatility he brings along OL. Keep.
