This is what I keep coming back to. The Coach/QB combo has to outweigh tough decisions like this. This is a very Patriots move.
Saw Chiefs are having Ronald Jones come to KC to meet with them. Would be a solid addition to the RB room.
Will be very interesting to see if they can pull off a DK Metcalf trade. Lockett seems like a gamble. He is turning 30 and also has some big cap hits coming up.
Or do they just sign Valdes-Scantling and then draft a WR because it is a deep and fast class.

Yeah, it is opportunity cost. Read an article about how the Patriots didn't want to overpay for marquee names because that means weakening the rest of your roster and settling for bad players at positions you might be weak at. They said the bottom 8-10 players on the Patriots roster where often better then many other teams backups because they had the money to solidify the whole team. Teams that overpay for star names generally end up paying for it in the win loss column. Overpaying WRs generally doesn't work out well for teams in general.

The problem with trading for DK is we'll fall into the same hole of having to pay him a huge contract very soon. Guessing that is not the play.
Yeah, although it wouldn't be Hill money yet but could be a situation where they would see from his agent what kind of contract he is looking for and that will determine if they trade.
Very tough to lose Hill, but simply not enough $ in the cookie jar to pay everyone (Hill, Mathieu, etc). Hill was a special player that metrics don't even do justice for how it opened up spacing for Kelce, etc.
Chiefs were very successful when they had some great talent on rookie deals. Have to hope Veach can pull similar magic and get some young talent on team friendly contracts.
It really makes it suck that they blew that lead against the Bengals at home. Coming off a third straight SB (win or lose) would feel better than this situation. AFC is just loading up for bear, particularly AFC West.

I know the defense needs help, but with the defensive additions to other AFC west teams, the Chiefs also better address the O-line to keep Mahomes upright.
Jones doesn't excite me too much. He has talent and had some nice moments in TB but he has had fumble issues that landed him on the bench multiple times. He's 24 so maybe a change of scenery and new opportunity will help. Honestly I hope they can resign McKinnon as he really thrived late last season as an option out of the backfield in the passing game. He's not a starter but would be a good back to have for passing situations. Gore and Williams also had some moments and in KC's offense I am not sure they necessarily need a stud RB at the position when you can mix and match with some different skills and who has the hot hand at the time.
Looks like Metcalf has said no to the Chiefs. Not sure why any WR would turn town a chance to catch passes from a QB like Mahomes, especially with Seattle's current QB being Drew Lock who hasn't shown that he can be a reliable starter so far. I think they draft a WR regardless what they do in free agency or a trade, in what round though is the question depending on if or who they acquire at WR before the draft. The picks they got from Miami give them flexibility to either trade some to get a proven veteran or maneuver in the draft to get someone they would target.

If that is his ultimate goal then good for him. Not like a player of his caliber was ever not going to get a contract that 99% of people could live comfortably with that kind of money for the rest of their lives. Some guys value more money over winning but when their team is not winning they have no room to complain as the highest paid player on the team. As a Chiefs fan I am going to miss his talent on the field but not going to miss the horrible human being he is off it.
This is one area I hate about professional sports are guys that want paid to be the top guy at their position then they complain about losing and their team's inability to surround them with talent. Rarely does being the highest paid player and being able to play for a consistent winner happen for most of these guys. Look at Aaron Rodgers for example, he's hogging a ton of cap space that has basically handcuffed how much Green Bay can spend to put more talent around him and on top of that made it nearly impossible for them to trade him too because only very few teams could take on his salary and GB still would still take on a cap hit if they traded him so the price tag was going to be steep on what they needed in return. Wonder how long it takes for him to complain again how he has no one to throw to now that Adams is gone. Guys like him make plenty of money off the field in endorsements too that while I get the prestige there is about being one of the top paid guys in the game, if winning is important there are ways to take less money that affects your team's salary cap and compensate that with smart business deals off the field. Maybe it is easy for me to sit here and say as an average Joe that doesn't even make a fraction of what these guys make per game compared to years worth of work for most of us.
Kirk got grossly overpaid which is going to throw off the market. A guy that has never topped 1000 yards or more than 6 TD in a single season should of never got that kind of money. The Jags obviously overpaid for a reach with him. He's 25 so an expanded role maybe helps realize some potential and it doesn't look like a bad contract down the road.
This trade was a fantastic move by KC. Love it. It is like people didn't learn anything from the Herschel Walker deal. Oh well. Only a franchise QB in their prime is worth this amount of draft picks.

My thing is, I think Mahomes is as special as it gets. I think he can elevate a team. And paying Hill 30 million plus just isn't possible, and also would really hinder putting a complete team around Mahomes.
Obviously not a huge Pats guy, but the way they kept their dynasty going was not locking up the first batch of guys with huge contracts. It was getting rid of them before the payday and continuing to build around Mahomes. Veach has done a good job in the draft, I'd rather have 5 picks than be locked in and fighting the cap for years.
Just kidding. DK to Chiefs starting to pick up steam.
Would you give a late 2022 first and a third or fourth for DK?
