NFL: Kansas City Chiefs Thread

He's trying to get them to get the play into his headset. Been doing that forever.
It still bugs me. He's like a puppy that can't wait for you to place the bowl of food on the floor. Good grief.

The 2nd/3rd and short play calls were ass.
Agree. Two stupid reverses one third and one, and 2nd one both were drive killers. I hate taking the ball out of Mahomes hands in that situation. One I understand but the second was a mistake by Reid.

Drops were one thing and can be fixed, but there were 0 receivers getting open most of the night. Seemed like Mahomes had plenty of time, but nowhere to go.

The Chiefs lack possession receivers outside if Kelce. Smith-Schuster was kind of that guy last year but with him gone and and Kelce out it was a problem.

I'm going to be honest. I think it was a huge mistake for Reid to bring back Nagy as an OC. Granted I think Andy is mostly behind the play design but Nagys play calling with the Bears was brutal. That dude shouldn't be calling plays for any NFL team.

The Chiefs dropped a lot of balls and the pick 6 isn't going to help win games but some play calls, or at least their timing, looked a lot more Mickey Mouse than last year.

We have 3 of the best interior lineman in the NFL and Pacheco, we should be able to get short yardage conversions easily. Hopefully Ross can turn into that possession we need. We have too many of the same body type of receiver. Chiefs need to figure out the offense without a superstar tight end cuz Kelce could drop off any time. Plus they are going to have to start to pay some these young defensive guys in the next couple of years.

Not having Kelce probably magnified the WR issues too. Defense key in on trying to stop Kelce which loosens up the coverage a bit on the outside. Toney and Moore were just brutal last night though with the dropped passes. Mahomes threw those right on the money, gotta make those catches and it's probably the difference in the game. 8 targets for 1 catch and 1 yard out of your top 2 WR to go with some very untimely drops is not good. Ross and Rice are going to get some more looks if those 2 guys don't clean up their mistakes next week.

Bingo. I don't miss JuJu specifically but I will miss his body type. We don't have a thick WR. They're all tall and skinny or short.

Toney and Moore had 8 targets which amounted for one catch for one yard. Talk about a bad night, but that is unbelievable.
Lot of talk today about the Chiefs tackles getting to line up deep in the backfield, but if the refs had a problem with it, then they need to call it. That is on the refs, not on the Chiefs, a quality player will take what he can get away with and keep doing it until he is flagged for it. I thought there were a few late hits on Mahomes, but it doesn't change the game.

Chiefs had the game there to win, they just have to catch the damn ball.

That last sentence is so accurate.

My biggest complaint about Andy Reid is there are times when the staff lets their ego get in the way of just calling the game. We have too many cute plays trying to get everyone talking about what a great play call that was instead of just getting a first down. Case in point last night, 2nd and 1 inside the Lions 30, and we run basically a double reverse that gets toasted for a 3 yard loss. How about when we are up by three, get Mahomes under center and use the best three interior lineman in the league to just run right at them and get the first down.

And if you don't want to run a QB sneak with Mahomes, just take him out for a play and put Bell in and have him fall forward. Oklahoma was able to do that. Never understood with getting cute our "tricking" teams with Bell in motion. Just line up and do the damn thing.

People have caught on to the Bell thing but should still be able to get 1 yard.

They were calling the sneak out as soon as Bell stood up out of his stance to go in motion.

Not sure if you watched the Quarterback series on NetFlix, if you haven't give it a watch as there was an episode that talked about how they come up with those "cute plays." One practice during the week they have a "lab" session where players and coaches experiment with new plays they come up with. Sometimes when they run them during a game they don't always play out the way they expect them to and other times they are a huge success. I like that they do this because it has to be another reason why players love playing for Coach Reid and allows players input to think outside of the box when they think up something that might work.

Mahomes talked about some of these plays and how there was one in the playoffs they ran and the 1st option they wanted to throw to they sniffed out right away but as a result left Toney wide open in the endzone, might have been that "ring around the rosie" play where they got into a circle and danced around before lining up. The point of that was they brought in an extra lineman to be an eligible receiver and the confusion that circle huddle does is when they break the huddle the hope was the defense would not initially notice where that guy lined up at so he would be left uncovered on a route.

I don't mind the trick formations and plays when used in the right situations. 2nd and 1 I'm guessing they felt that was the time to do it because still had 3rd down and short yardage to go if it didn't work. That's a play where if it worked as designed it maybe results in a big gain catching the defense off-guard but in hindsight now it wasn't a good call. Its just 1 game so I'm not concerned. After watching Quarterback and seeing how hard Mahomes works and prepares and how that rubs on off his teammates too I'm expecting with the extra few days of rest and preparation they are going to come out looking much better week 2. It was pretty obvious to me that between Mahomes, Cousins, and Marriotta that Mahomes clearly does a ton of work and game prep to be the player he is. That's nothing against the other 2 QB they documented as Cousins does a lot too but when they talked about game prep, strategy, and plays Mahomes really went into a lot more detail with everything I thought.

I've said it here before, players should have taken notice of how things played out for Le'Veon Bell when he held out. He not only lost a bunch of earnings but didn't get the contract he thought he could and eventually was out of the league not long after he was in his peak years. You not only get labeled a headcase but the older you get and the less you are on the field the chance of landing that big contract after sitting out dwindles away the longer you hold your ground.
The funny thing is Jones said he learned from Bell what to do lol

Toney really crapped the bed along with other guys dropping passes. That could have been a blowout if guys just caught passes.
