K-State Thread...

I think he actually "fair caught" one or two last week. In the words of Harry Doyle (Major League): "Let's just be glad he didn't spike himself on that one."

Great hands but I heard a couple of those punts he did have some running room. Guess maybe he's saving that for the pros.

My $.02

Here's my $.02 I have on my Cats.

Offense is going along about as good as it has the last few years. Freeman is finally coming into his own. His downfall is his ability to throw the deep pass. His short passing game is VERY good (doesn't lock onto receivers and goes thru his progressions). He's not a scrambler.

RBs are average. James Johnson and Leon Patton share the load. They'll go as good as the O-Line goes.

O-Line is getting better, and quite a surprise. We lost our center a few weeks ago (Bedore -- our best lineman) and our backup Viers has been doing a decent job. He's underweight, but quick.

Receivers all starts with #27 Jordy Nelson. If this guy isn't 1st team AA this year, it'll be a travesty. 2nd leading receiver in the nation with receptions and yards (just broke the KSU record for receptions in a year... with 4 games to go!!). He's deceptively fast and has SOLID hands. Daniel Gonzalez had a career day last week against Baylor... he's been up and down. Deon Murphy is the quick guy, but on the small side.

TEs are average.

D-line has been a disappointment this year. Could be the switch to 3-4, but don't know. D-End Rob Jackson was supposed to be a stud this year... not really. The other end Moses Manu is coming on as the year goes on, and Nose Steven Cline is decent.

Linebackers are average. Justin Roland in the middle is solid, but the other middle guy (Reggie Walker) has been pretty bad. John Houlik might take his place Saturday -- he does fly to the ball and hit HARD. Outside backer Chris Patterson plays out of position all day, but athletic.

D-Backs are strong point. Corners are solid in Cheatham and McKinney, while safeties with the 2 deep is solid as well. Watts seems to be playing hurt, but Chris Carney has emerged as a great safety.

Kickers are solid -- punter Reyer should be a Groza finalist, while kicker Rossman has been a pleasant surprise.

Special Teams are VERY special. KSU stresses the importance of ST. Only problem would be kickoff coverage.

Hope this all helps. I actually expect a decent game Saturday.

Thanks for the break down... You attending the game???

ISU needs to be very scared on special teams this is where KSU excels at they have had a lot of big returns on kickoffs and punt returns. This is where I am really worried. KSU offense is the highest scoring team in big 12 play lots of scores set up by the kicking game. They throw mostly short passes for 2-4 yards they are using it as an extention of their running game because it is not doing so hot. They will throw a halfback pass in this game they seem to run on every game probably about the 25 yard line. ISU needs to run the ball KSU D has been getting shreaded the last few games and giving up chunks of yards. ISU really needs to just keep controling the ball. KSU gets big returns but has also given up some big returns might be nice to finally see Bell or Summerall break one.

One key will be the special teams. It is going to be hard for us to beat anyone if we keep allowing the opponent to start their drives near mid field while the ISU offense starts near the 20.

I think ISU will have some success on the ground against KSU, but we are going to need to do a better job at winning the battle for field position. If we can do this, I think this team is playing well enough to give KSU a run for its money.

Did anyone call in Monday night to the call in show and ask what is up with our kickoffs? I was at the game and I'm going to blame the 3 points Missouri got before the half on coaching. Kick the damn ball!!!

I am heading up to Ames Saturday morning (leaving KC around 5:30 am). Like I've said in other threads I've been to Ames in 1993, 2003 and 2005. I love the tailgating around the stadium -- I put it up there with the quality of K-State.

Then our group is staying in Ames Sat night to catch the night-life.

VERY well put. I think if ISU gets a running game going, and can run for 8+ yards a pop, it'll put KSU in a place it doesn't want to be.

Against Baylor, I saw KSU ran more 4-3 that it has this year.

I didn't catch the call in show, but I'm sure the coaches are just as frustrated as the fans. It may take recruiting to solve the deficiencies in our special teams.

I'm hoping for a little Jack Trice magic on Saturday. Given the strength of KSU's special teams, we are probably going to need some turnovers by KSU to have a chance to win.

Are you college age? If not I'd suggest finding nightlife somewhere other than Ames.

The best part was when Willie played the guitar with his teeth. Does that really get the crowd riled up KSU4tc??? I think Pollard should play that on our videoboard just for kicks.
