I believe this is now the third or fourth version of a plaza design. The first rendering was a paved surface with a lighted canopy, then I believe there was a version with raised grass hills, then a version with a Trice stripes sculpture on the north end. And now this, which is different from all of them.

I understand designs go through many iterations, but they don't always get shared with the public. I suspect cost cutting is a factor, but what's going on?

Note: I think the design is great, so no complaints. (Although the Trice stripes sculpture was BA.)

I noticed that too. Honestly, none of the designs are super pricey in comparison to the others, so I’m not really sure why it keeps changing.

I don’t even want to ask this because it will sound like I’m complaining which I’m not because that looks amazing. But is that Grass in those big squares? I can’t believe that won’t get trampled and be hard to grow.

I don't know how trampled it would be given there would only be crowds there 6-7 times a year. Besides, with the size of that plaza, the pavement would be plenty wide for people waiting in line to get inside. I guess if it were a concern, they could put a curb along the edges or a 6 inch retaining wall.

I guess I was hoping that they'd do a little more with that plaza than just a couple of grass squares. But who knows how it will eventually turn out...they've changed it 3 times now. I for one kind of wanted to see an open plaza lined with statues of former players and coaches. Start with 4 close to the stadium with room for 10 more.

I completely agree with the statue idea. I think it would be really awesome. However, I see Campbell potentially disliking that idea. Singling out individual players and taking away from “team” mantra. Except for Jack Trice, that’s obviously a different deal entirely.

Yeah, I could see that. If I were doing it, I would start with Trice, Davis, McCarney and maybe Majors. But there would be room for Amundson, Wallace, Blair, etc down the line. If they put in guidelines where you had to be out of school 10-20 years, that would help eliminate the individual vs team issue. Maybe add one statue every 5-10 years. I think that it would be a super cool entry into the stadium. And not all that expensive if you space it out over decades. MBB has numbers hanging from the rafters in Hilton, but FB doesn't really have anything like at in JTS.

This may have already been discussed but, please tell me they are going to add this little bit of Bergstrom to the SPC? I feel like they have too, it would be very unappealing if they don't. Maybe they are waiting till it gets warmer to do it?

Are you asking if they are going to put the same stone (limestone?) exterior? I would guess that they won't. Pretty much no one sees that exterior. Looks to me like a couple of loading docks. I know inside that little triangle, they're going to have aquatic therapy and the major hallway connecting the buildings (along the south wall).

Floor plans say no, but it makes sense, considering those windows on second floor of the existing building are offices.

I doubt it because it would cover up a bunch of windows. Plus its on the backside of the building away from the street so who is going to see it except maybe fans in the stands.

Some of it is cost- some of the changes are to stay aligned with the changing design of the entertainment district as well. The first sketch of the plaza was before the district concept was even hatched. The plaza was then altered to some degree for cost but also to more closely match the district across the street. With each alteration to the district, something could change on the plaza (lighting, art, type of concrete or colors of tiles). Or so I am told.

When we switch to turf inside the stadium it'll give the old grass-field-turf guys something to do outside the stadium! :jimlad:

I’m not sure what you’re asking. That’s not part of the Bergstrom. They added that a few months ago as part of the current project, to connect the two buildings.

I noticed the empty “pie slice” months ago when the footings were in, and watched to see what they’d do.

Will be interesting to watch when they smash that glass front of the building.
