John Deere strike imminent?

And in other news...the Case IH and New Holland machinery salesmen are having a GREAT year selling equipment to John Deere farmers who want to improve their machinery line this winter :)

The average production worker at Deere makes about $60K last year, and could end this contract earning about $72K. 20% increase over 6 year period and year 1 would have been a 6% increase, but the UAW rejected that offer.

And I know people who would give one of their arms for 60k. Too many people worried about what and how others make their money. Who cares if the CEO makes 60 billion. If you don't like your job.....get another. If you think you are worth 60 billion.........then go get it. This coveting BS is for the birds. If I was rank and file and heard the UAW biggies turned up their nose at a 20% over 6 years......I would be flushing my union membership yesterday.

Heard stories of Allis doing that last time. Their gleaner combines were so bad at that time that they lost business. One guy talks about his auger just falling off while picking.

the members literally voted and it wasn’t close. The UAW isn’t forcing the strike on anyone.

Majority have been mismanaged and that is why they are being phased out.
Some pensions have been mismanaged. Underfunded and poor investments. But they also based pension liability on bad longevity assumptions.

But pensions are becoming dinosauers because of the risk they represent to business operations and investors when they become underfunded.

Much less risk to implement retirement plans where companies match a % of employee contributions and employees can track valuation. Then the boogie man becomes Wall Street and corporate greed vs. that companies mismanagement.

I guess everyone has a right to their opinion.

Yes the UAW was responsible for the tentative agreement on Oct 1. When union employees voted, then 90% rejected.

At least based on report in DBQ paper union employees are just as upset with UAW.

There is a very large group of workers blocking the main entrance to the Ankeny plant this morning.

The one off Irvinedale? There was like 15 people there by the stoplight.

So it begins. I wonder how far apart they are. The initial vote makes it seem like miles, but then again, it can go from 10% to well above that pretty quickly. The workers have the initial leverage, so I think they were probably going to reject anything off the bat unless it was a massive improvement.

50ish people picketing outside the foundry in Waterloo this morning.

From everybody I know that is union there it really sounds like they're fine with being out for a while, easily into next year.

They're just as upset with the UAW as they are with Deere. It's ugly.

why are they upset with the UAW? Because they negotiated the rejected offer?

That’s what I’ve heard too. If it looks like it might go on that long I wonder if it’s worth it to hire and train some scabs.

For a large, publicly traded company like John Deere, what is it that the CEO does that makes them worth $14.5M a year? What part of their job justifies them being compensated 240x what the average employee does?

They don't have a direct hand in making any of the products that their company sells. They don't design new products, or develop new manufacturing techniques. So what is it about the person at the head of a company like John Deere that deems them so much more valuable then someone on the production floor?
