Imagine if NIL had always been around. I don’t think many of my favorite Cyclones would have stayed in Ames.
Guys like Tinsley, Niang, Haliburton, etc would have had life changing money thrown at them when they blew up on the national scene. Obviously they’ve had long careers in the NBA but they essentially came out of nowhere.

I said when this all started, every league/ team will become a feeder system to the level above them financially. We have several teams in the B12 that have the $ to compete with anybody, but we are not one of them. Example - BYU reportedly paying $7M for the top HS player in the country.
I am going to choose to remain hopeful on JJ until it is officially announced he is leaving. Hope it’s just a rumor.

Skill wise I think he’s there. Athletically a maybe. Honestly Niang is probably his comp.
Apparently Houston can compete. Dont need a committed fanbase, just need a billionaire (Fritatta, or whatever rf his name is) to buy players.
As far as being a feeder system, how many people watch AAA baseball? I can already feel myself becoming a much more casual fan, i missed some bball games on tv this year even, after having season tix for over a decade.
Partly why I'm glad Keshon and Curtis don't have any more eligibility. They would almost certainly test the portal if they were still here (and who can blame them) and it would suck if their career at ISU ended that way.
The system needs to be fixed asap.

I think Hali and Niang would stay in Ames. They still talk about ISU/Ames to this day. Heck, Hali just named his dog Ames
Ive been moving that way for years as well. Love reading things on CF but just dont care nearly as much about college sports as i used to, everything going on with portal, NIL, realignment, etc has just accelerated that. Realization set in around 2018 that there are things id much rather spend free time doing and also there is no need to stress about outcomes of games involving 18-22 year olds.
My family ( parents, myself, farm, and businesses) donate to a-lot of places, two areas being a-lot of money to ISU athletics and the college in general. With everything happening in college sports and the loss of federal funding in other areas, including some in ISU, that are very important to our family we have been discussing reallocating our giving. No guarantee on what the outcome will be but athletics is generally the first one brought up that can be greatly reduced to shift to other causes important to us.
I feel like I’ve become more casual as the NIL era has drug on. I still have season tickets for FB, WBB and donate to We Will, but my overall consumption of and interest in college sports has declined. I’ll pay attention to ISU and maybe a couple Big 12 games, but that’s it. It’s just getting harder to have anything more than a passing interest when the rosters turn over every year and you never know when your players are going to be poached/tampered with by a $EC or B1G program. If ISU ends up being relegated to the bottom of the pile, I’m out in terms of paying any attention to major college athletics
Just like in day to day life, the separation between the billionaires and us non billionaire scum will only grow.
I am curious what happens when media companies are left on the hook with giant contracts to broadcast a product the general public has mostly lost interest in. At some point regulation is in everyone’s best interest.
In the past, for that kind of money, 21 year olds actually manipulated the outcomes of games!
It is going to be difficult to return the transfer portal back to any reasonable facsimile of what it was. (not that I believe the old system was good for the players) However, what we have now is "Dodge City" portal time. The players like the power that comes with the current portal system. The college game was always about the head coach, Jay Wright, Tom Izzo, Coach K, etc... now we are witnessing the players wrestling the power away. College basketball is on an NBA type trajectory- easier to get rid of the coach than turnover the roster.
IMO, returning to having to sit a year after transferring would solve a lot of the issues. Still lets an athlete transfer if they want, but it makes it much more difficult to buy a top team.
