JC transfers......KSt. Model

Yeah, I don't honestly think Iowa would fare any better in the Big 12 than Iowa State does, or has. They would be a perennial 6-6 team at best.

What I don't get it is why doesn't Iowa State try to tap into some of the areas Iowa recruits? Iowa is good at getting big, physical O-Lineman, and almost always has a future NFL LB or two on the roster. Iowa State should focus some of their recruiting into areas NOT within driving distance of the Texas schools.

You're contradicting yourself a bit here. If Iowa couldn't do any better than ISU would or has, why would you want to recruit the same types of players they do?

This is a great point.

Our offensive system is fine. We just need to do a better job of not getting injured...

I didn't say our offense was fine. I said our system is fine. The last thing we need to do is go to a power I or pro set offense. We just need to have non-injured players and an OC who knows what he is doing.

Iowa doesn't bring in many Jucos and they compete on a Kstate level simply by developing HS 3 star type guys.

They play in a conference that is made to fit for them. A bunch of rust belt schools that have snow on the ground in Jan. Minnesota, NW, Illinois, Purdue etc are pulling mostly upper midwest and great lakes talent.

When it comes to football/recruiting ISU probably has one of the worst conference affiliations in all of college football. You sit in a cold climate and there are teams in conference that may never see a flake of snow, and you have to convince a talented kid from the state of Texas with offers from in state schools, to come north and freeze his butt off. That is a challenge.

The fact of the matter is with departures of CU, Nebraska and Mizzou really hurt ISU. ISU used to pull some decent kids from Omaha from time to time, some of that had to do with snub factor of Nebraska, and kids wanting a chance to play for a team like ISU, so if anything they could show Nebraska what they were missing. It really hurt to lose those teams from the conference.

WV is already starting to see the problems, they too are out of place in the "new" Big 12, more than ISU and it will get harder and harder for them. They will continue to tap Florida for talent, but it may not be as good as it was in the past, given they don't play down there anymore.

ISU survived re-alignment, and that is great. But under the old Big 12 it was hard enough to compete in football, under the "New" Big 12 its worse.

Funny how when it comes to the indoor sports, we seem to be more competitive. Then again a larger portion of the talent for these sports comes from areas, where people are snowed in for several months a year.

I realize that. I guess the point I was trying to emphasize is that we are at an extreme disadvantage in the recruiting department even after getting around the fact we have no tradition. With the type of players Iowa recruits, I doubt they could have sustained success in the Big 12, not that they're even setting the Big 10 world on fire. I'll admit though, that I'm envious of how they fit in their conference relative to how ISU fits in the Big 12.

There are a few problems with trying to go "JuCO Heavy"

A. Ever since KSU had their best years going JuCo heavy EVERY school looks at JuCos now. Even Bama and the likes. It's a lot harder to completely rebuild off JuCos since it's harder to get the top prospects.

B. You have to get the right ones. A swing and a miss on a JuCo is a double hit to the program. Eats a scholly for two plus years that could have been used to develop a freshman who could have contributed.

C. You have to balance the cost of not getting a freshman that you can develop who could end up better in a few years. Yes you could get a starter right away but that takes snaps away from a younger guy already in the program who could have been better in the end with experience.

D. You have to have class balance as well. Loading up on JuCos all in one year creates a LOT of holes a couple years down the line.

DMac got in a vicious cycle when he depended on JuCos to come in and replace starters over and over. He got some HUGE steals but also ended up with depth issues down the line.

In the current JuCo environment it's all about balance. We are not going to be able to go out and get 6 starters from JuCo. We CAN got get a few guys who can be immediate contributors at need positions, particularly at DT and LB.

KState really doesn't rely on JuCos as much as they used to. They have the great connections still though and cherry pick to get some of the best available.

McCarney got extremely burned on some Juco's. Usually for academic problems. Yet they have no problem at KSU getting in.

Iowa's peak years would still be 10 win seasons in the big 12. Its just that their mediocre years would be much worse then they were in the ***** big 10.

I'm not sure I agree with this. I mean ratings-wise ISU and Iowa are pretty much dead even when it comes to recruiting.

Cyhiphopp is right on. Snyder does NOT rely on jucos to constantly reload. He uses jucos to balance classes and fill misses in high school recruiting. He does NOT sign a juco unless he feels the young man can compete for a starting job his junior year. Snyder does have great connections but they have been earned. He places youngsters at certain jucos every year and has excellent success in getting them on campus two years later provided the players prove worthy.

About 25-30% of K-State's classes are JuCo players. In the last 5 years, they have signed more than double the number of JuCos as we have. If it makes up 1/4 to 1/3 of your recruiting strategy every year, I would say there is some reliance.

Alternatively we could actually develop and coach the young players we have.

2013 Iowa #53 ISU #58
2012 Iowa #43 ISU #87

2010 Iowa #42 ISU #60
2009 Iowa #63 ISU #73

2003 Iowa #43 ISU #46
2002 Iowa #51 ISU #30

Iowa's 2005 class would throw off the average so if you take out the best and worst class and then average it you get Iowa's average class rank of 44.5. ISU's is 57.9. That's a pretty significant margin

I understand they don't match up entirely, but somebody was saying on here earlier that the gap between recruiting classes ranked 1-25 is a lot wider than ones ranked 26-60...something along those lines. Looking at the numbers you presented though, it appears unfortunately that recruiting is actually down in comparison to the McCarney years. #87 in 2012? Yikes, what happened there? Another 3 or less win season to come in say, 2016 or so?

While K-State has been a great example of a success story going this route (Snyder is a master), and I tend to agree with you in general, it doesn't always pan out just like K-State. Want the perfect example, see KU's recruiting class this past year......Yahoo Sports: Rivals.com 2012 Kansas Commitments

I think its important to remember you can get away with more things in Manhattan, Kansas than you can in Ames.

Bill Snyder won at Kstate bc he's one of the best coaches of all time, he built his program to win using whatever players were at his disposal, to me it is much more about what kind of coach he is rather than whether or not he brought in Juco kids. Nothing against any of our coaches but none even belong in a discussion with Snyder. Just because he was able to do it, doesn't mean everyone can.

At this point in time the biggest issue with ISU is with linemen, wish is strange because traditionally that is where NFL guys from ISU come from. Now ISU actually has a pretty decent core of skill players, especially on offense. The big uglies are not there or hopefully, have not developed yet.

In before obligatory "we landed on the moon" post.

I think we can agree that the team's biggest weaknesses are offensive play calling & both lines. I would love to see some JUCO studs brought in for the D-line, but on the O-line you really have no choice but to develop your players. The playbook and schemes take longer to learn.

You're welcome.

We have 7 players in the NFL, Iowa has something like 23. They have evidently recruited better players than us somewhere along the line.
