Probably because his father is a multi-millionaire and that scholarship uses what few resources the team has on someone who doesn't need it. Many kids who play on D1 teams could never afford college and the scholly is their only hope of college and the son of a rich man just took that away from someone, even a reserve player.
Doug McDermott at Creighton, three time All-American and consensus national player of the yeat was a walk-on. You know why? So they could save that scholarship for someone who really needed the financial help.

Most likely, the scholarship would have been open if they did not award it to Jack. Don't know what year he is, but if still an underclassman, it likely would be conveyed that it was a one year deal that may or may not be renewed based on team need next year. A nice way to reward the walk-ons that have contributed to the program without tying up a scholarship by reaching for a prospect.
lolGood for him but I'm wondering, why should we care?
It just seems like a very Frannie Mac- type of thing to give some undeserving, white guy walk-on a schollie. Not something I'd expect to see at MSU.Go on..
