ISU's problem

Did you see CU's QB this weekend? I think he had time for nap on some of those plays. Arnaud never had that.

A precise, accurate, consitant QB goes a long way in any offensive set. Until ISU gets some improvement at QB nothing will change.

An offensive line that resembles more a brick wall and less a sieve goes a long way in any offensive set. Until ISU gets some improvement at OL nothing will change.

Wide receivers that catch all of the catchable balls thrown in their vicinity instead of putting at least half of the passes that hit them square in the hands on the ground goes a long way in any offensive set. Until ISU gets some improvement at WR nothing will change.

But yet it's so easy just to blame everything on the QB... :skeptical:

The sad thing is on most plays the secondary played a hell of a game. The problem is you can't expect the secondary to hold coverage for 10+ seconds - somethings bound to break open if the QB has that much time...

We never look to go vertical with the passing game. Thats why our offense is so bad. All we do is run the ball and throw 5-10 yard routes.

This! We have absolutely no playmakers on the edges. We have 3 or 4 really solid possesion type guys but no one that scares a defense, or even forces them to gameplan around. Also, I'm not knocking Austen but the last 2 years he has been very reluctant to throw downfield, I'm not sure if thats by design or comfort but it allows defenses to squeeze the field. Tiller on the other hand has shown the tendancy to take some shots deep, maybe next year Herman will be more aggressive with playcalling.

Question for everyone, did Herman really have more talent at Houston then at ISU?
James Casey was a 26 year old NFL caliber TE and Dillard is a NFL caliber WR. Clement was an NFL prospect that is playing in the UFL. It is arguable that they had as much talent. Difference was they were playing in Conference USA. They did not do well against BCS teams.

Sadly, we are going into year 3 of the Herman offense and there doesn't seem to be a strong indication that we have that guy coming in next year either. Tiller is the only guy we have next year that has started a game at QB, and the popular opinion seems to be that he isn't the guy for this system. So I guess if this is really the problem, we are at least 2 years away yet from having a good offense.

I think the jury's still out on Herman. There's a lot of talk of "wait until he gets the players he needs." Then someone says "what we have doesn't fit his system." So what does fit his system? Super fast receivers, strong armed think on your feet qbs, big strong fast linemen, a great one two combo at back etc etc. In other words, the same kinds of upgrades that every team wants. The problem is that ISU won't be getting significantly better players until it fields winning teams. If Herman can't do more with less, then we're in a classic Catch-22.

+1.

I am in the belief we need to see how the current staff recruits to fit the system.

The truth is...the prior two staffs recruited terribly (I say this while having great respect for the seniors) DMac and Chiz did not do CPR and Herman any favors. The next two years will give the grade.

Our lack of ability to stretch the field vertically.

Colorado found this out and exploited it.

That is because we lack speed across the board, And i don't think AA is accurate on the deep ball.

edit: did not see that this was already posted... like 9 times

You know, I'm not sure how true this is. It seems like today's ISU team has exactly the same type and quality of players that have been its hallmark for the past decade or more ... scrappy, mostly limited talent guys with lots of heart. Why do you all expect Rhoads to recruit beyond this when neither Chiz nor DMac could? Face it, we will continue to get these same quality guys until we are consistently a much better team. Thinking anything else is pie in the sky. So for me the question is: can Herman figure out how to win with the talent he has???

PS: I know that some of you will now name a few individual talents in order to prove me wrong (Wallace, Davis boys, etc etc). Remember these guys were exceptions that proved the rule.

The fact that we've faced the toughest schedule in the country might have something to do with our rankings.

I don't have the stats for this, but Tom Herman does an excellent job when we get in the red zone. When we have short fields we take advantage.

Our talent level and depth make it tough for us to sustain long drives. There is no quick fix for that.

Tom Herman will get the job done. We just need to understand that we were coming off a 10 game losing streak when PR took over. You can't just turn the ship around overnight. We should all be thankful for how much the coaches have accomplished in the first two years given the situation when they took over.

This is important. To really be successful at ISU it is always going to be developing talent more than recruiting it, and it is going to be doing more with less. We aren't going to be pulling in recruiting classes in the upper third of the Big 12 year in year out. I don't think that would change even if we start winning more. I still think 3 or 4 years from now we will still have less raw talent on the field than the majority of the Big 12 teams we play. If Herman can't figure out how to be successful in this situation, then he is in the wrong situation. Wally seems to be doing just fine with the defense in his first two years.

I think the Chiz is the perfect example of this. D coordinator on an undefeated Auburn team, d coordinator on a national title Texas team, now looking like he may be playing for a national title as a head coach at Auburn. As coach at ISU he couldn't beat a MAC team. I don't think he forgot how football works for 2 years, he is just a guy that can win with talent. It is a different breed of coaches that coaches up and wins with less. It seems to me like CPR and Wally fit that mold, but Herman hasn't shown me yet that he is that type of coach.

This is the major problem, but the OL has under performed as well. Also, the zone read has been defended much better by teams because AA simple did not make good reads and very rarely kept the ball. Personnally I hate the zone read because it requires the line and the QB to choose how the ball is going to be run at the snap, and a lot of times it looks like they are running two different plays. I long for a team that just lines up and runs the ball to a certain place and then lets the RB look for cut backs to take.
