I'm pretty sure a driver for the band DIED on a bowl trip a few years ago.

I'm pretty sure that was a Memphis trip, and it was a medical episode for the driver.

Flying - It's _expensive_ to fly nearly 400 people....anywhere. I'm guessing the travel money comes specifically out of the band fund, maybe a bit of help from the university/athletic dept. At the band alumni* luncheon at HC, they said only 100 members were going to Ireland with 5 staff (IIRC). And consider the extra funding/money needed to fly the drums & sousas & other instruments overseas.

* - Not an alumnus, but married to one and have experienced twice going to bowl game music festivals in HS with 200-250 people on the trip.

IIRC, they flew us to Houston in '05. Seems like Orlando would also be worthy of a flight.

IIRC, there was another year where they chose to take buses and applied the cost savings vs flights to buy new, badly needed uniforms

The travel money for the band comes from the bowl's allocation to the University

Yes a driver died in Memphis in 2012(?). Not sure if it was a private charter or the band. Contractor was Windstar out of Carroll

My daughter is in the marching band. Scary for the kids on the bus that was in the accident, but all the kids are okay.

It’s a long process to get 350+ kids to Orlando and back. It was 31 hours to get down there. They left yesterday morning before 8 am and will get back to Ames around 2:30 this afternoon. They had expected to get back around noon. Great group of kids that are super dedicated to the Cyclone game day experience.

Sure but a bus is only going to drive 65-70mph max, and the professional drivers are limited in how many hours they can drive in a 24 hour period.

Plus every stop is going to be longer when there are 80 people on a bus.

I am guessing there are cameras on these buses. Just to protect everyone, we will see. Insurance companies might like people who carry people for hire probably strongly suggest it.

Here are a few hints: they don't budget for bowl games for bands; there are student fees and they can't be increased on a moment's notice; students pay tuition dollars and don't want that increased; professors and related G & A expenses can't be decreased for a band trip; and tax payer subsidies can't be increased on a moment's notice.

Please note that universities really don't have money other than cash reserves for capex and debt payments that are derived from student fees, tuition, and tax payer subsidies.

Who pays for cheer, flag, and dance aquads?

If u stated the ISU Foundation should pay for this then this is a slim possibility. Very unlikely though as they would get requests from a few hundred student groups.

Band parents and private fundraising are the only real sources. You would/could be a private source. Make a donation to the a Foundation and earmark it for band expenses.

A few things. Most of the travel budget for the band comes from the bowl payout. In this case it was a six night trip for the band. 2 on the bus and 4 in a hotel. They did a parade at Sea World, a practice at UCF, The official pep rally and of course game day. They also got some free time at Sea World and we're rewarded with a day at Universal Studios on Sunday. I was told that was paid for by the Athketic Department, the extra night and Universal. In contrast our friends have a kid in the Pitt band, they had 1 night in Detroit and it was optional. No pep rally, no performance.

The Band was scheduled to bus to Dallas for Big 12 Title Game, but someone or something stepped in and paid for the charter flights last minute.

The marching band is in the midst of a 10 million dollar fundraising campaign to build a Marching Band only Practice Facility. They currently practice next to the Cemetary on the North West side of campus, uneven grass and no lights. They are one of the best bands in the nation with no dedicated facility. That is what folks should donate to. Call the ISU Foundation they would love you donation.

Athletic Department is paying to take 100 members to Ireland. Members just found out if they were picked to go.

Sure could. Budget is not enough to cover costs as it is, you have alot of suggestions to something you obviously know little about. Care to make a donation thru the foundation to help the band, or just want to be a loud mouth.
