ISU baseball team

Jamie is going to be pissed when this passes and he has to open the checkbook! /s

Would be curious which legislator introduced and their reasons.

I am sure Jamie wouldn't have have a problem adding baseball if the state is willing to pick up the tab for a baseball team and a similar scholarship count women's sport program.

But the timing seems pretty silly with everything going on in college sport today. Feel like it is more likely that schools will be dropping Olympic sports to a club level status than adding.

Probably the same guy who ran on getting rid of MLB blackouts?

That screenshot says "BY WHEELER". When I looked up Iowa House Wheeler, the top hit was Skyler Wheeler. Says he's a rep for part of NW Iowa. His wikipedia page says he is a former baseball player. Take all of that for what it is worth.
You will get baseball and you will like it.jpg

Seems like a massive waste of time.

He's also introduced a bill to rename Hwy 75 in NW Iowa as "Trump Highway."

This will go about as far as the one a couple of years ago that would have required ISU and SUI athletics to fund UNI to the tune of several million dollars per year.

Are the idiots going to give back any of the 147 million they have cut from university budgets so tuition has gone through the roof? Jeff Kaufmann revenge tour on higher Ed.

He's the same guy that wanted Iowa and Iowa State Athletics to give 15% of their TV revenue annually to UNI Athletics.

This guy does not understand how anything works.

Women’s wrestling?

While baseball would be fun, I never understood why ISU as a northern school relatively speaking doesn't have D1 sanctioned hockey. Men's or women's. It is huge just an hour or two up the road, but zilch in the entire state of Iowa for whatever reason, where it is cold out literally 3/4 of the year.

Edit: Is Big 12 affiliation the biggest obstacle here? I imagine no other Big 12 schools have hockey as an NCAA sanctioned sport
Hyperbole anyone?

The monthly average high temp in Ames is above 72 5 months of the year and above 62 7 months of the year. How is that "cold out literally 3/4 of the year"?

Correct, such is the case with a lot of the Minnesota schools. Iowa state would kill it in hockey imho. Unlike baseball, Iowa state sits next to the Texas of hockey (Minnesota) plus Ames sits closer to the twin cities than some of the Minnesota schools and UND. You can’t convince me that Iowa State doesn’t offer a better college life than other top 25 teams. Maine is a top 10 program. Even Omaha was 12th this year.

I was friends with the Ames hockey staff a few years ago and they told me that Iowa State had contingency plans for expanding the hockey garden in Ames and adding a practice rink.

I don’t think adding sports is likely but JP has plans for hockey if it ever happened. Plus it makes adding women scholarships easier since you can have women’s hockey.
ISU may be closer to the Twin Cities than a few Minnesota schools but all of the Minnesota schools as well as UND are closer to Roseau, Warroad and Duluth which all produce college and NHL talent.

Let me guess. Highway 75 has a payday loan, casino, two liquor stores and a strip joint.

My conspiracy hat is on. Who proposed this bill? Is this legislator an Iowa fan? Making Iowa State field a varsity baseball would only take away resources from our other sports, we'd never be competitive.

But this sounds about as plausible as that law to annex the southern counties of Minnesota. Waste of time and resources even talking about it.
