***Iowa Pregame Thread***

Yep and Kirk and Phil will be yelling at their players all week while CMC doesnt have a ton to yell about. Also stock on Rocco at an all time high, Phil gonna try to bait him into an early INT.

Coaches will find about anything to rip on and it's rare for a play to have everything perfect, i.e. even on a scoring play there's usually a missed block/assignment etc.

I’ve decided to bask in the glory of a beat down of a good SD team, something that traditionally didn’t happen in CMC earlier years. Thoughts of Iowa and their arrogant, ignorant, obnoxious, blowhard, embarrassing, obsessive, delusional, juvenile…..I’ve got to stop or I’ll ruin the rest of the Labor Day weekend.

We should all be more thankful for Kirk sticking around. Same as it was with Fran. Whenever he retires, they might actually hire someone good.

I cannot subscribe to the “this game isn’t as important as previous years” thinking.

I cannot provide a single reason for accepting a loss. If you can, then please let me know.

I can provide infinite reasons for winning and nearly infinite reasons for winning with authority.

I share your concerns. It would be nice to blow them out though. We haven't really done that since like 2005 though (if that qualifies).
Agree. Since Coach Mac broke the streak in 1998, we’ve beaten them by more than 10 points only twice, 1998 and 2005.

Had this debate with some Hawkeye friends earlier this morning and said Rocco Becht is a top 5-10 QB in the country and they laughed me off. Im not talking about pro potential or recruiting rankings. In terms of winning college football games THIS year, are there 10 other QBs you would prefer to have?

If he comes back next year, I think there is a chance he could be considered a top 2 or 3 QB in the game. The vast majority of that offense is back next year as well.

With the whole "Super Bowl" thing, I think post-Dan McCarney, there's a stronger argument that this game has been Iowa's "Super Bowl." I know Kirk Ferentz has put extra emphasis on this game since he was losing it all the time vs. McCarney. Campbell has been treating this as "just another game," and he's 2-6 vs. them.

I personally think the whole thing is dumb, and I would love this to be our "Super Bowl" if that means we win every year.

Iowa is going to try to drag us down into the muck. Stretch zone, QB keeps, short passes to the TE, screens. We are the more explosive team, so they are going to shorten the game and hope we make mistakes.

Hold up vs the run, make them drive the field. Do not bite on play action. On offense, be patient and don’t let them bait you into a bad throw.

We have the better team. If we win the turnover battle, this one won’t be so tight at the end.

I don't know how they keep convincing QBs to go there. They completely ruined the careers of the last 4-5 that played there.

McNamara was a solid player at Michigan. He didn't magically become terrible when he went to Iowa. They made him terrible. 1,500 total passing yards in 2 years. For a guy making $1mill+/- per season. Unreal.
They pay them a lot of money. Gronowski makes more than Rocco.

I feel like people call a game someone’s Super Bowl when they play above their usual ability due to the importance of the game. At this point, I don’t think that it’s either teams’ Super Bowl. It’s an important game and a rivalry, but it’s more likely the teams make more mistakes than usual due to the pressure than playing out of their heads. It doesn’t take a super human effort to beat iowa…or ISU for that matter. More likely it takes playing a clean game.

I think we underperformed during the Brock Purdy / Breece Hall years and probably should have won a couple of those.

When I visit my home in eastern Iowa I'm reminded of the baked in indoctrination of Haydenism that goes on.

Gas stations, restaurants, sweet corn stands with Hawk stuff all over and hardly any ISU stuff.

They're literally isolated to live in a silo where it's Iowa, and only Iowa and the local media plays it up too. I couldn't find the ISU game on a local radio station, AM or FM, it was just static, and the Iowa game comes in crystal clear.

It's no wonder they think it takes some super human effort or some external source like weather to beat them snd this goes back at least to the 80s even though Fry had like 2 actually legit good teams there.

It tends to come down to like 5-6 plays and in those years, Iowa made them while ISU flinched (Hall is still waiting for the check doen to take the ball 30 yards before being touched on that mid-field Purdy int that was PI but still a bad decision) then in '22 and last year ISU made them to eek by.

I was just thinking about this as well. I think Campbell should probably shift toward thinking of this in a slightly different light…if only because the other team thinks about it as something other than “just another game”.

Similar to playoff baseball, the Iowa players and fans go nuts when they tackle our guys…especially the first few times. You have to acknowledge that so you can match their intensity. Punch them in the mouth…shut them down…and then they’ll get frustrated and start whining.

I’m putting absolutely zero stock into Iowa’s game today when thinking about next week. Kirk always has his guys ready to go for their Super Bowl. Heck, what Iowa State has done the first two weeks also means nothing in this game. It’s always weird and it’s always close. Cyclones will need to play an A game to win.

Haven’t beat these clowns at home since I was in 4th grade. It’s time.
They spent last week prepping for us, not Albany.

I admire your optimism but I haven’t reached that point. Hanson is our pounder and he was just ok against SD. Giving Rocco time in the pocket & then his improvisation if flushed will be important.

Normally CMC gets sucked into playing Kirk's game but this year he knows what our strengths are. Iowa's back 7 is littered with question marks, we will use the pass to open up the run. The second half we will be able to run it on Iowa and that will salt the game away. I'm not normally super optimistic about this game but this year feels like it's the year where we win pretty comfortably. If we play our game and don't spot Iowa 6 on defensive or special teams play I just don't see how they are able to score enough points.

I feel a lot better this year than previous years. We played a lackluster, slow game against ND before Iowa last year and the offense got off to a slow start against Iowa. First play against SD this year is a 60 yard pass and then a score within 2 minutes. The team kept going insane and pulled out 55 points despite throwing backups in midway through the third quarter. Iowa is horrible at passing again and their defense didn’t look as good as normal in week one. Hoping we can finally beat Iowa at home.
