We get it, you think Ames needs to be like small town Iowa, but that's not what Ames is. It's a higher density of people.
You're funny. I commuted because of various reasons, but one being it acts like a bigger town than it has resources of. I always parked in the commuter lots or when I did live on campus I paid for a parking pass. I rode the bus every day I was there. With that said recognizing parking has issues is just common sense. When I would visit friends in campustown and that area it was ridiculous trying to park. Especially on Football weekends my friend who lived just south of the city ramp it was impossible to find a spot and if you were staying overnight you had to deal with the switching sides. Maybe there are alternatives that I could have employed, but it is easier to park downtown Des Moines than campustown.

Also, Campustown needs to be able to attract people that work and live in Ames that aren't students (excluding the bars). In order for places like Potbelly/Jeff's/Fuzzy's to thrive they need working adults to visit.

The current parking situation makes that a big enough pain that my coworkers and I rarely get there, even during the summer.

While it is a pain, it is smart for the City to take care of their parking enforcement. Much like the IRS for the Federal Government, every dollar sunk into parking enforcement yields a multi-fold return on investment.

Again, I agree it is a pain, but making sure enforcement is not neglected is fiscally responsible.

I live in downtown Denver (3+ million people) and have never gotten a ticket parking downtown or anywhere in the city, while in Ames I got a ridiculous amount. Kind of absurd how many resources Ames pours into their parking division compared to cities 50x bigger.

Ha, I've only lived in Denver for a little over 3 years now, and got a ticket right after I moved here. Apparently they changed parking rules downtown at night. Back in college you could park for free near the ballpark after 10, but not anymore.

I was one of those people that had a diploma withheld for parking tickets. I racked up quite a few when I had my parent's car on campus for a semester. Later got a job on campus that gave me a parking pass up nice and close, but it didn't wash away those tickets from the earlier years.

Broke my ankle at the rec center once and got a temp handicap pass for a few months. My popularity increased dramatically that semester.

Sounds like Ames could use some Libertarian Activist "Robin Hooders". Go around filling the meters ahead of the rent a cops. One of the few activism things where almost everyone (except those getting the money) are in favor.

Are you compelling me to do something against my best interest? Asking me to provide for others at my own expense? What are you, some kind of pinko commie socialist?!?

I think Johnny Knoxville did that on Jackass.

I did pick up on that a few weeks ago, apparently in certain places downtown meters are 24-hr which is crazy to me.

My main gripe with the parking laws are the "No Parking 3am - 6 am" in the public lots. Obviously cheaper than a DUI, but still sucked getting slapped with a ticket when I had to leave my car after a night out with friends.

Yeah, yeah, I know, "just don't drink too much," or "get an Uber" (did that option the most often) but I have yet to see that rule anywhere else.
