I've been a die-hard Cyclone since my 7th-grade science fair at Hilton—talk about destiny. After four glorious years in Ames, I found myself ridiculously attached. You’d think they’d made the sidewalks under the campanile with glue!

Yet, life pulls you in unexpected directions, so here I am in Coralville since 2019, deep in enemy territory. I’m on a mission to raise my kids to bleed cardinal & gold, but it’s an uphill battle against a sea of Herkys everywhere.

And now, for my latest act of treason: I'm applying to an online grad program at Kansas State. Yes, that's right—our Farmaggedon rival the purple kitties. Just typing that out makes my stomach churn like I've swallowed a corn dog sideways at the state fair.

So, fellow Cyclones, please hurl your best insults my way. I need them to keep my head straight every time see KSU addresses in my emails.

First step is admitting you have a problem.

Try being me man. I have been a life long Cyclone fan. Raised my kids to be Cyclone fans. Son a basketball ball boy. I was a football ball boy in the 80's. My daughter goes to Iowa. Yeah, I have to write checks to them. Her major is only at Iowa in Radiation Science. I actually don't write checks to them. I transfer money into her account so I don't have to pay them directly because I hate them so much. Luckily my son is going to Iowa State to be an Electrical Engineer. However, I still see her wear that disgusting clothing. It's horrifying. The good thing, she still roots for the Clones when they play Iowa out of respect for her dad

at least it's an online program. May you never have to set foot in Manahattan. Get ISU plates that say CYKTHOK

I lived over there for 4 years while my wife was in school there, but was lucky to move away once she was done! She goes to all the ISU sporting stuff with me, haven't been back over there for a long time.

Just make sure you represent the Cyclones. If you have zoom classes, always wear Cyclone shirts and have Cyclone memorabilia.

We've been to the UofI hospitals a lot in the last 5-10 years (nothing crazy serious thankfully) and I always try to wear Iowa State stuff when we go. Have always had good experiences, though.

Lots of people say Ames and Manhattan are the same, which may be true on paper. But in my experience they are pretty weird over there.

Usually perfectly polite and tolerable in a surface kind of way. But definitely a little off and oddly full of themelves when it comes down to it. Lots of people say they are our sister school. I think its more like they're our weird cousin school raised by that Aunt you don't like. Same grandparents, different rules that suck.

They also have SOME Nebby and Iowa in them. They don't even bother to learn our players names. Like the attitude you get at a small town country club that hasnt been renovated since the Carter administration or a judgmental church group busy-body who gets a little too excited to volunteer at a youth group adolescent lock-in. They don't realize no one really cares that they're there and they're completely replaceable. Which is fine, so are we. But at least we get that.

That is a very difficult thing to do. My three kids ended up in medical fields and all attended UHok. I am a total failure as a dad.

I got an online MS degree from Iowa state back in 2008…. Just saying, the options are there. lol.

I get it, maybe it’s not offered from ISU. No worries, life is more important than athletics.

Find a way to get your kids on campus at ISU, just like you fell in love with ISU at your science fair. My daughter recently had a similar experience. She was in 8th grade last year and got to go to the ISU campus for women in STEM day and she is pretty much set on ISU now. Getting your kids on campus early can really sell them on it.

We should have a beer sometime and discuss what happened in our upbringing the kids so this don't happen to our grandchildren and scar those poor kids for life.
