I clocked it...

Enough with all the frustrations, just go to the special teams coach …ha

I'm can't remember what his name is but the guy that is always warming up next to Dunn after the half seems to have a better punt almost every time. He doesn't appear to have the longest punt but he seems to have consistently good hang time. I'm curious as to why he isn't getting more reps? Unless he folds and kicks worse in the moment of a game. Regardless, I'm not sure it can get much worse and why we aren't trying something different cause what's taking place right now isn't working.

That'd be Cameron Shook. Both he and Dunn were warming up pregame at UNLV. Dunn clearly had the bigger leg in warm-up, but we all know that's not everything

I vaguely remember hearing that one year back in the late 90s maybe we had an open tryout for ISU students to kick field goals or extra points. Was that true?

Yep that's him. I knew his last name started with an S but for the life of me couldn't remember his name. And like you said Dunn definitely has the stronger leg, but one would think hang time would have some merrit to it.

Where is Rivera. Why did he leave? It’s not like he’s in the NFL!

I know in recent memory, SMU was the largest university to have just random college kids try out to kick. I think this was a few years ago. Just sent out a campus wide email to every student to show up at the practice field.

2004 I think. We had two kickers on scholarship and neither could hit an XP. I think Culbertson (“shaggy”) was a walk-on that year and eventually won the starting job.

That’s how I remember that as well.

I wonder how much stopping that fake punt against Texas last year has played into our game plan this year? I have said before its almost like we are playing for another fake punt whenever the punt return team is on the field. We are not rushing to block the kick, but we are not playing for a return either.

Time to fix both our punting problems and our returning of punts, could we also find a kicker that can kick the ball into the endzone every time.

According to FEI, we are 129th overall in special teams and field position (FBS/FBS games only).

125th and 126th in punt returns and punt coverage, respectively.

95th and 122nd in starting field position and opponent starting field position, respectively. 119th in net starting field position difference.

The trajectories of Dunn and Shook
punting side by side is obvious. That said pregame and halftime warm ups obviously don’t tell the whole story.
But Dunn’s warm up punts don’t look different than his in game punts. Line drives every time. I have a hard time believing his punts during the week are different.

The only reason I'm against Mevis punting is because I don't want to risk injury to our reliable 40+ yard FG and Out-of-the-Endzone kick off kicker.

This is my concern. If I recall, his kickoffs regressed throughout that game against Baylor. Went from touchbacks to kicking at about the 5. Could have been wind/direction of kicking/my consumption of whiskey, but I remember thinking that during the game.

Don't need to be Top Ten in these categories but if 'details' is going to be mantra and the way you have to win at ISU, this obviously is a big fail.

Field position is an offensive problem too.

Lol, how fitting that Nebraska is 128. They lost the MSU game in a similar manner as we did against Baylor.

I clocked Corey Dunn's punt to set up the big return 3 times.

Time 1: 2.91s
Time 2: 2.85s
Time 3: 2.87s

That is F***ing pitiful.

What did you guys get?
Good stuff in this thread. The Baylor punter had a huge net average, and it really affected the game.
