I am borrowing this post from r/CFB because I think it is relevant to Iowa State. Is music through the PA system in stadiums getting a bit excessive?

Haven’t gone to a game this year, but in years past it’s been WAY too loud. I understand it needs to be loud…. but instead of setting it at 11…. why not 9 or 10 instead?

I know a few people that don’t even go…. because of that reason alone.

Piped in music has kept the crowd significantly more engaged this year, especially coming out of the timeouts, IMO.
I disagree that it keeps fans engaged because the only time we're engaged is when our PA announcer tells everyone to stand up and get loud on third downs.....he literally has to tell us to make noise...kind of pathetic.

How is the game day host thing going?
she's much more toned back.....the first game was rough to put it lightly....they obviously worked with her to tone it back a bit...she still brings just enough energy but it's not so over the top....she also ditched the "ISU" fans thing.....yes, our acronym is "ISU" but she's been mostly saying "Cyclone fans" which is much better.

I usually make 1-2 games a year. This year is HANDS DOWN the best game environment we've ever had. It's not close.

I am in the boat of turning the volume down, but only a tiny bit. The noise is an advantage for the home team, use that advantage.

I also did bring ear plugs this year and used them. I don't mind that one bit.

I will again raise the question of exactly which game they turned the poor PA guy into the person who screams at people to get excited on third down, instead of using the player videos on the video board. I couldn't be there for UCF or Texas Tech so it had to be one of those games where they made the switch. When I returned last week vs. Cincinnati, it was jarring.

The loud head-banging music is designed/needed to generate an emotional euphoria that the event itself doesn't/isn't generating. As you note, therein lies the problem.

I personally feel on a 2nd or 3rd down when the music is blasted it makes literally no difference in the feel of the game

This is just anecdata, but I don't know anyone who actually gets pumped up by all the extra music. The right music at the right moment, sure, but nobody can sustain that kind of energy level all game long.

However, everyone seems to think everyone else gets pumped up by all the extra music.

I'm 56, I have tinnitus probably from going to 100s of rock shows so I'm extra sensitive to the loudness coming out of the speakers. You guys need to understand they are blasting well over 100 decibels and that is not safe at all. They could turn it down some and the content will still keep the crowd going. I actually bring hearing plugs.

These excessive timeouts are killing the game. When you see a 3 in front of the timeout countdown it just sucks all the life out of the stadium.
The problem isn't the band, it's the excessive stoppages for TV timeouts. It's brutal. The piped music is a reaction to that new reality.

And now that I'm older (44) they don't play music I know or care for - especially at a football game.

Having to wear earplugs at a college football game in an open air stadium to prevent discomfort or protect oneself from piped-in noise is ridiculous.

Are we seriously complaining about the music being too loud now?? The only time there has been a problem was against Texas Tech it wasn’t loud enough. Not sure if it’s because I’m younger than most on this board or if it’s where I sit, but it hasn’t been overly loud at all IMO.

If there is anything to complain about it should be the big money donors sitting on the 50 yard line and in the Sukup club that sit on their hands all game

I have yet to hear one fan in my section say "this music really makes the atmosphere a lot better"
I really don't understand where you're going with this. We either blare Rick Ross/Crime Mob through the loud speakers on 3rd down, or.... the band. Which one is going to fire up the fans and players more? Pretty obvious answer because it's what we already do. It's not going to please everyone, that's fine.
