I am borrowing this post from r/CFB because I think it is relevant to Iowa State. Is music through the PA system in stadiums getting a bit excessive?

Link to the reddit thread discussion:

I'd like to start and preface that I never was in band nor marched in any high school or college marching band but I'd also consider myself a bit of band nerd anyway.

I know every Iowa State school song and its lyrics, I know all of the stand tunes, whether they're being played in between plays or during timeouts, and much more. I'm an ISUCF'V'MB "fanatic", if you will.

One thing I've noticed and I'm sure others have noticed this year specifically is that our band is not given many opportunities to play in between plays. Our PA system has instead decided to blast mostly rap music between each play and I personally don't care for it. One thing I appreciated about our game against Kansas in Arrowhead was that both bands got to play their school songs/stand tunes in between plays, after scores, etc.

Iowa State's band isn't even allowed to play "For I For S" after successful PAT's anymore....which has been a tradition for YEARS. Maybe I care way more than the average person, but I feel as though it has diluted our environment in that perspective.

Why have a marching band if they're not allowed to play?

I’ve really liked the changes they’ve made to the atmosphere at Jack Trice this year, and that would include the music they’ve pumped in. Like it or not, I think it does a better job of keeping the crowd engaged, particularly the students. I guarantee these changes came from the survey they sent out over the summer, so people obviously voted for things to change and this is the AD’s response to that. All they need to do next is mercy kill the Bells of Iowa State and the game day atmosphere the best it’s been in my lifetime.

Bells of Iowa State: I’ve dove into the lyrics and story. It’s awesome, and really cool. But I get so freakin angry every time they do this. It could not be worse for the moment and is so out of place. It’s the perfect case of “well we’ve always done it this way” when there’s a perfectly good reason NOT to do it anymore. Whoever is leading the charge in the AD defending this honestly needs a serious talking to because their being really selfish and stupid.

I have brought a lot of my sons' friends with us to games this year, and let me tell you they love the atmosphere this year.

Kill the Ama Mater? Not a chance.

Kill the lady yelling at timeouts. That would be a great start.

Similar to fewer and fewer organists playing at baseball stadiums of late...just a sign of the changing times. Certainly I associate marching bands with college football...but not sure it will revert to the way it "used" to be.

Actually they changed when it was played this year because of some complaints. Used to be the last thing played before the team came out, they now play it earlier in the pre game show.

My son is in the Marching Band at Iowa State and they are not a fan of the amount of piped in music. I am sure there will be split opinions on this, but I think more band less piped in music. Of course I am biased.
I can't imagine Carichner is much of a fan either....

The Bells of Iowa State lasts literally a minute and at least they placed it before the salute to service/national anthem so it’s more appropriately placed.

If you think the Bells of Iowa State dilutes pregame than there’s no way you could argue that the national anthem doesn’t do the same…I’m not arguing for us to abandon the national anthem just saying it’s not a “hyped” pregame school song.

So quick question on the playing of the Alma Mater? Are those saying it is a buzz kill are you an Iowa State Aum? Most of the folks around me are Alums and would be disappointed if it was not played. Not busting on anyone just wondering as to me that song means alot and I would be upset, as an Alum if it were not played. JMHO.

To be fair, it was played right after the national anthem and before “Go Cyclones Go” aka “Don’t Know the Words”.

I like the Bells of Iowa State but I like its timing in pregame much more now than I did previously.
