As an Iowa fan this hire doesn't scare me in the slightest. He's done some good things at Oregon State and I don't expect them to completely suck, but I don't think he's winning championships either.
 
I wonder if they even contacted Jerry Kill. If I was NU I would have gone full force after him.
 
Why don't schools take their time when hiring a coach? 4 days to make the hire. Really?
 
This could mean Scott Frost is still available next year for, you know, whomever.
 
I'm guessing it went something like this:

Nebraska calls Riley's agent and his agent dies laughing at how much of a reach it is for Nebraska.
Riley's agent calls Riley and Riley says something along the lines of "Nebraska wants me? I realize it's living in Lincoln but back up that money truck!"
Riley's agent calls Nebraska back holding back the laughter from the payday he just got out of the blue.
 
It could work out.

**** load of head coaching experience unlike Frost. Look at Rich Rod once he got a fresh start at Arizona.

Of course it could fail miserably too.

I don't get it. You fired Bo, not because he lost but because he wasn't getting to the next level and now you are hiring a guy with essentially the same thing going on. This makes zero sense. At least if you hire Frost there may be upside. I just don't see it.
 
Always have to be careful of what you wish for, I wish only the best for the bugeaters.

the AD probably had Riley lined up and just had to do the formal interview. it is helpful to have your guy in place as soon as possible for recruiting and continuity
 
Curious hire, but let's be realistic - it's not much easier winning at Oregon State as it is winning at Iowa State. Yes, they have some Nike money, but not anywhere close to what Oregon has. And, prior to Riley's first stint in 1997, OSU's last winning season was 1970 - so in some ways they have an even worse football history than ISU. Not to mention he has to compete with Oregon, Washington, and the California schools for recruits. Based on how "successful" he was at a place like Oregon State, he's a good coach - but it's still a curious hire because Nebraska could have hired someone with a better resume than him.
