How does tailgating work

I did it in 23 minutes last year and I'm in my late 50's. Wear gloves it helps insulate it. Guy in our group did it in under 15 minutes! Drink your heart out Joey Chestnut!!
I never did it, especially in college, because I wanted to know why someone would do something to limit themselves to basically a sixer of beer. That's like just a warm up.

To get things started right, mix up hummer shots (1 oz of 151 and 1/2 oz of rumplemintz) and blast this.

Hmm..... I have two quart jars of shine in the fridge....maybe........not! I really don't want to pass out on Saturday.

How do tailgates work? Is there a CF tailgate? Can my girlfriend and I be at ya tailgate?

When I attended ballgames a decade ago, I was a god-awful KURE student radio broadcaster eating from the media room, or volunteering with my folks to take tickets at the Alumni Center / Cyclone Central tailgate (which I hear isn't happening this year.)

I'll be back in the homeland this weekend with my girlfriend, who wants to see what all the hype is about. She went to school in the UK where college athletics and rivalries are ... not a thing. It took a few months but she stopped telling people I went to "Iowa" and not Iowa State *screams*

Anyway, would like to show her what all the tailgating hype is about but don't have a tailgate. Have currency, beer, etc. though. Help a not-savvy person out?
One of us! One of us!

I did KURE play by play and color commentary as well. 2017 was my last year doing it, so I fortunately got to call some good Iowa State games. Loved loading up on food in the press box before the game though.

Figured I would piggyback on and ask a tailgating question. Wife and I are tailgating for the first time (for her, ever, for me first time in about 15 years, when I was just a dumb kid). Group we are meeting with doesn't seem like they've really ever done it either, as they don't have a grill, camp stove, or any means of which to cook warm food/keep food warm. To me it sounds like they just want us to bring some cold finger-foody like dishes to share. Others are bringing a fruit tray, veggie tray, and plenty of dips so far. Anybody have suggestions?

Set up next to people that have a grill, lots of food and offer to share the cold foods and alcohol you bring so they add you to their tailgate.

If you want warmer food, go to dollar general, get a small table top gas grill, a couple packages of brats, some buns and whatever and just grill it yourself. Those grills are 30 bucks or so and a couple LP cylinders are a few bucks.

Take her to the patio of the Alumni Center and buy her a ice cream from the ISU Creamery. Great view of the whole tailgating area also, plus some cool ISU stuff inside along with a air conditioning if you need a break from the heat.

Ok - serious answer. Sounds like you're meeting them - so you'll have to walk over to their tailgate area? Things to consider. How far will you have to walk? Do you plant to take anything back to your vehicle? If not, will they be able to keep your stuff in their vehicle until after the game?

Consider what all you do/don't want to pack to their tailgate and what you want (or don't want) to deal with when you're done tailgating and rushing to go in for the game. Not wanting to deal with much? Pack food in disposable containers and/or take food that doesn't need to be chilled/cool. If you want to pack more and are willing to take things back to your vehicle before going in to the game - I recommend using a foldable wagon to haul it all. Or at least have something easy to carry it all in.

IMO if the tailgate isn't next to you, at your vehicle or just a couple vehicles down - keep it simple and easy.

Sounds like Slim Jims and a plastic bottle of whiskey will get you to where you're going.
