Born with cardinal and gold running through my blood. Dad and Uncle are alumnus of ISU. Had the great honor of watching the Earle Bruce years here and went to nearly every home game. Met some really AWESOME CYCLONE players and coaches during the 70's. Have an autographed ISU Christmas card from Earle Bruce/Dexter Green from 1977 Peach Bowl and a set of cocktail glasses sent to me by then President of the Cyclone Club Mr. Mal Schmidt (R.I.P. my friend) who kindly befriended a young teenaged boy during those wonderful years.

Grew up in NE Iowa listening to the arrogant Hawks (and they stunk at most sports at the time, but they were still very arrogant). Came to ISU for engineering and decided that ISU and Clones were 'my kind of people'.

Grew up a hawk fan amongst hawk fans. Everyone that was cool loved the Hawks.... Attendend ISU and 'Saw the light'. In the mid 80's - Hawks were darn good at football and ISU... was not. I'm not proud of my childhood. I burned a childhood picture of me wearing a black sweater with that damned chicken on it.

Very similar to my story. I also grew up an Iowa fan, I would even listen to Zabel call games while mowing and raking. I was a fan for a good while even as I attended ISU. I had my first experience with Hawk arrogance when I attended the 1997 Iowa State/Iowa game at JTS, also my first college football game to be seen in person. That began to sway me. I was swayed over to hating them permanently after I saw the Squawks gloating over how horribly the season ended for ISU in 2002.

I still have one Iowa sweatshirt leftover from that time of my life. I wear it while changing oil and working on my vehicles. You can barely tell what was originally on it now.

Very good post for your first one!! I also went to ISU for engineering, went to my first ISU football game in the fall after enrolling and have been hooked ever since. Tried to give it up cold-turkey in the 80's and failed. It had gotten in my blood and I couldn't get rid of it so I just gave up trying.

Seriously though, I also felt that ISU and the Clones were "my kind of people". I loved the campus, the people, classes, activities, etc.

I'm liking how the numbers are evening out on the poll. It shows that not only do we bring new people in, but that people from our school have kids and those kids stay with ISU. That more than anything is what will strengthen our school in the long run. As in, 'Daddy, could you donate a couple mill to the college of engineering?'

I've got a niece who is quickly becoming a ISU fan because of their volleyball program. Guess that just goes to show that those lesser sports are also important.

I had scholarship offers from pretty much anywhere I wanted to go, but ultimately I chose ISU for two reasons(well, maybe 3).

1. My parents went here and they loved it and so did I everytime I visited.
2. Marching Band. I saw them in high school and knew that while I could find academics anywhere, this was what decided it for me.
2.5. I didn't really apply anywhere else, and ISU was the first to offer. And they sent me an application which was completely filled out, other than my signature.

Both of my folks were from Iowa and my dad was actually a hawkeye fan growing up (has changed in recent years). I never lived in Iowa and I honestly didn't even know what the team name was for ISU until I attended fall orientation. I just didn't pay attention to college athletics back then. After I graduated from HS, my folks moved back to Iowa (near Huxley) while I stayed in Washington for a year. My dad applied to ISU for me and I decided to accept (wasn't sure if I wanted to go to college).

I actually didn't know what was happening with football my first year and I finally watch my first Cyclone game on TV, it was the OT Missouri game in 2004. 2005 I followed the Cyclones much closer, but still didn't watch my first BB game until 2006. Since I joined CF it has been all down hill for me.

I was basically turned about half way through my life. My brother in law is about as die hard Clone as you get, so being around him and coming to games it turned me completely. Very happy to make the switch though!! I now live in Ames, making me a season ticket holder for football and wrestling.

Born and raised Husker fan, grew up near Kearney, NE. Went to ISU (twice, for BS and MS), never been the same since. My family hates me, especially this year, but I always cheer for ISU. I think NU being good helps ISU since the North is weak, so I still cheer for Nebraska otherwise. I totally hate Iowa and Colorado, and wish that they were 0fer every year.

edit: also turned down a full ride at Nebraska to go to ISU to be strapped with tens of thousands in debt. Tough to justify at times, but still a good decision.

I grew up a K-State fan until I decided to attend ISU in my later high school years. I lived in northeast Kansas until grade school when I moved to southwest Iowa, and most of my family (quite large) are K-State fans or Alums. I would root for ISU if I were watching or listening to them (except against K-State), but I wasn't really swayed about winner or losing very much until my senior year, listening to us blow our football game at KU in overtime in 2004. In the spring I followed basketball in the Big 12 tournament and our win over Minnesota in the first round of the NCAA's. (I hope I have all of that correct, if not, I blame alcohol.)

Now I am a full-blood Cyclone fan. I root for us at all times against all opponents. I still root for K-State, since they were my first college team, but I do not follow them very closely anymore.

Used to visit my brother and his wife at Pammel Court 30 years ago and just always had a great time. Loved the football games. 25 years ago started an annual weekend party w/ tailgating and a game. Still going.

Just always loved the stadium/parking/tailgating layout, easy to get tickets, every now and then a great game, sitting around afterwords and listening to bitter complaining or hopeful enthusiasm for the next game.

ISU's a big school but somehow always felt like a small town where you knew people and we're all in this together and the team is like your high school team and you always support them and they never give up, no matter the odds.

Finally, there's something about the eternal struggle to gain respect and improve. I don't know, ISU just always felt like a good and comfortable fit, even tho I didn't go there.

My first basketball game came in 1980 when I was 6 months old. I have loved the Cyclones everyday from then on.

Grew up under the sinister influence of the dark side. Decided to go to Iowa State when I realized that I wasn't going to major in medicine or law and I wanted to actually get a job after graduating. Once in Ames, I saw the light.

Well, a little more than 12 months ago I didn't know a whole a lot about Iowa State. Next thing you know, I'm about to start my second semester here.

Strangely enough, my dad and I were picking out ballcaps when I was 8 or so, and I wanted the one with Cy on it, because I thought he looked cool. Been a fan ever since.
Grew up as a fan of the evil of which we shall not speak. Went to Ame's to avoid attending where all my high school classmates went. Struggled a first but developed a strong appreciation. Beautiful place.
