How can I speed up my computer's processing?

I have an 8 Year old Sony VAIO computer.

504 MB RAM
13.9 GB Hard Drive with 1.74 GB Free Space
92.8 GB 2nd Hard Drive with 42.8 GB Free Space

My problem is it has been running really slow lately. Is this a RAM issue, or A Hard drive issue.

Is there any good programs to clean up my computer? I ran defragmenter, but it didn't help much.

It seems I have a lot of processes running in the background, how can I clean those up? I don't know which ones are necessary or not.

Thanks for any help.

A reformat will clean up things and help you out a little bit, but with those specs, it's still going to be quite slow compared to today's standards.

Get the background apps out of the startup.

Get more memory.

Move more stuff off your C drive.

Get a better defrag and cleanup program.

Run Malwarebytes to see if you have junk running your computer.

Befriend someone with IT background.

Yeah I have run Malwarebytes, nothing there. I think it is all the Services/Processes running in the background taking up all my RAM.

Maybe it is just time for a new computer.

Have to agree with a good reformat. The quickest and easiest way to clean up any of the junk that you have collected over they years. Just make sure you have everything you want to keep backed up somehow.

Also, memory is dirt cheap and easy to change out on your own. An upgrade there would be quick and cheap.

And as others have mentioned, if you don't do gaming or graphics design or anything like that, you can get a new machine pretty cheap that won't have any issues taking anything you throw at it.

Uninstall anything you're not using. Get more memory. Run msconfig and remove apps from startup. If still too slow get a new computer.

Be happy you got 8 years out of it. It's time for it to be recycled.

Yep 8 years is a good long life for a laptop especially. Probably time for a new computer.

If you feel the need to keep this one going for long, save your important files off on a external hard drive or jump drive and just reformat and start over.

Are you running Windows XP on it? If so, I'd definitely recommend more RAM. 500MB is pretty minimal for that OS. I have an old laptop that improved tremendously when I upgraded to 2GB of RAM (the maximum it can hold). I think it cost me less than $60. Otherwise, like other people said it might be time for a new computer.

yea man that thing is really old

nowadays you can get 4GB RAM, 500GB hard drive and some really fast processors for around $1000

thats light years ahead of your current computer

How does the battery work on it? If it is shot I would not waste money upgrading anything. I would just reformat the system as others have mentioned. Hopefully you still have your system recovery discs, as you may have issues finding the proper ones for a system that old.

If the battery does still work decently, then do the reformat then buy 2 of these:
Newegg.com - Patriot Signature 1GB 200-Pin DDR SO-DIMM DDR 333 (PC 2700) Laptop Memory Model PSD1G33316S

Just adding memory alone will work ok but the reformat is where you will gain most of your increase in performance.

Did your computer commit a crime and get arrested? If so, I doubt you will be able to speed up his processing into the jail, but you could try to slip the officer on duty a $20.
