Hoiberg Watch 2015: Monday, June 1 Open Thread

Don't give up on Cyclone athletics or the teams we love. Don't make this about Iowa State as a whole. This doesn't change the way I feel about the university or its teams.

Hoiberg leaving says more about him than us. Remember that.

Are you this bitter in real life?

Have you never looked for or taken a new job?

Not saying I agree with the poster you quoted, but Fred looking for/taking a new job is not at all the same as any one of us doing so.

That being said, I can't imagine myself ever taking another job when I've said my current job is my dream job & where I'd like to finish my career. Not to mention the manner in which this new job has been taken.

Most of don't publicly tell people that we are at our dream job. I am very upfront with my boss that I have interviewed with other companies. I love my job and would be happy if I did retire there, but I don't tell people I will.

My current job could be my dream job, but if someone comes along and offers 2 times my current salary they have my interest. Oh, and if that job happens to be recognized as one of the top handful of jobs in my profession? Hell yes I am considering it.

After that it comes down to what a guy really wants. Fred obviously wants to coach in the NBA. You and me might not want that. But, HE does. His life, his choice.

The honest truth is Fred Hoiberg is just a man. Iowa State is bigger than any one man. We won before Fred and we will win after him.

This. Everything is fresh now but when the new coach dethrones Kansas next year all will be (somewhat) forgotten.

The big key to the new coach won't be next year. Although if he does well, that will buy a ton of goodwill. But the real challenge is 16-17 and beyond. Which is why this hire is so critical for ISU MBB. HAVE to get it right.

even though yes I agree Ames it someone liberal but there are some good options in Des Moines you can always move there. Honestly he has enough to retire now; peace is worth more than any monies can by buy you can easily easily live of 60k a year. He could have downgraded himself to assistant if he didnt like the limelight. After he wins the NBA championship then what?

There's a difference between saying your current gig COULD be your dream job, & publicly announcing it IS your dream job, & one that you want to stay at until retiring.

No **** it's his choice, I just think it could have been handled better. Why say that at all? Say you love your job, say you love Ames, great. Just don't see the need to say what he said back then.

Some people, maybe. But that's clearly not Hoiberg's style.

Look at Warren Buffet (and all other super rich people), with your mindset they would have made a few million and retired. Instead, they made billions and are working late in life.

I don't want to look at Fred the same way I look at Cael, Chiz, Gable, but it's hard not to. People that leave ISU find great success:
Cael-3 National Titles
Chiz-1 National Title
Gable-15 National Titles
DannY Mac- 1 National Title
Fred-?

I'm sure there is more but ISU is a good stepping stone.

I know Hoiberg's buyout is lower for an nba job, and maybe it's already been posted in one of the 10,000 posts this last week or 2. Still, can someone tell me how much ISU will be paid to buyout his contract going to the Bulls?

I wanted to address this "dream job" aspect one more time. I think maybe it would be helpful to view it like a bucket list. So maybe here's Fred's career bucket list:

1) Coach ISU Mens Basketball
2) Be a NBA General Manager
3) Coach in the NBA

So he accomplished #1 on his list, does that mean he is obligated to abandon #2 or #3 on his list? It doesn't to me.

500k

Can we all seriously get over this. Fred was great for the university. He brought us from bottom to almost the top. But what if he wasn't the guy to actually get us to the next level? There were plenty of games last year that we ****** down our leg and nobody ever wanted to blame our golden child. But in all seriousness, WAS FRED A GREAT X's & O's COACH??? I think Fred was great at putting people in place for him to succeed.

What if Fred had stayed at ISU and next's year team, as hyped as it is, **** the bed. Then his 2016 recruiting class leaves him without a top tier roster? What if we fall into mediocrity with Fred. Then what? Just saying...

What if (THE NEXT COACH) leads us to the final four, possibly further. Then signs a top 10 recruiting class (something Fred has never sniffed) and that coach takes us to a level even higher then our current one? Why so negative? Everything happens for a reason. Maybe today the reason isn't clear, but I promise you, next year will be as fun as any we have seen in Cyclone MBB history. What happens after that, only time can tell!

I am Loyal to this team and university, not Fred Hoiberg. With that said, good luck in Chi-town Freddy, may you hopefully never regret this life choice.

Won't bother to watch the presser. More FH BS. Oh it was a diffucult decision, I love ISU, blah, blah. Fred, we know the real you now so just tell us that you are a money lover that sh** on ISU for your personal financial gain. Oh and thanks for quitting while still getting paid. We can and will do better with a coach that is actually upfront and truthful.

This X 1000. If he's on medical leave from the University, how did he find time to interview for all these job openings. Tired of the same ole' bs that keeps getting shoved down our throats.
