I think an overlooked weakness of Iowa's offense is their wide receiver play. Yeah, their QB's have been really bad recently, but their WR talent is probably bottom 2-3 teams in the Big 10 over the last 5-6 years. They always have a good tight end or two, but the wide receivers have not helped their passing game at all. If their wide receiver play doesn't improve, I don't care who they have at QB. (Caveat here - Charlie Jones might disprove everything I said. Maybe their WR are fine and the QB's are just that bad?)
I don't think it's a coincidence that Iowa State's improved QB play went hand in hand with arguably 5 of the best WR in school history. Lazard, Butler, Noel, Hutchinson, Higgins were all a huge step up from anyone we saw since the Todd Blythe era.
In the Rhoads era, I thought Arnaud and Richardson were actually pretty good QBs, but our WR talent was lacking big time compared to what we've had in the Campbell era.
