High School State Tournaments

I first heard that story sitting around the hotel lobby over cocktails at NCAAs back in the late '00s. It doesn't get any less painful when I hear it now. I use the phrase "that's the most ISU thing ever" a lot/too much, but THAT REALLY IS the most Iowa State thing ever. Slot Ben in at 174 and Max in at 184/197 to go along with the Paulsons and Backes and we win at least two team nattys, not to mention the absolute monster recruiting pipeline we'd have now.

Fml.
Also remember Bono’s character. When he was an assistant here he was still trying to make the Olympics. When we attended Midlands, I think it was that one, he would enter himself unattached. Which is fine, but when he came upon an ISU wrestler he wouldn’t MFF out like a coach should, he would wrestle them. I had physical therapy with him back in college. The guy had issues then and still did up to the last I knew.

Bono beat Cyler Sanderson in the 2008 Midlands final, in a match worth 4 team points. ISU lost the team title to Iowa by 3 points.

It didn't help that ISU went 0-5 in the finals -- any one win would have done it -- but that one really stuck in the old craw.

Tyler Clark lost to Brandon Precin
Nick Fanthorpe lost to Dan Dennis
Reader lost to Morningstar in TB
Varner lost to Dallas Herbst

Yup. I'm pretty sure Bono was at UTC at that point and probably wanted to stick it to Cael, but that was the last straw for me with Bono. And yes, we could have gone ahead and won one freaking finals match and taken care of it ourselves. Was that the first time Brester beat Varner, because I remember being shocked by that one.

I'm still surprised Reader hitched his wagon to Bono. I'm sure he recruited him to ISU back in the day and there was a connection there, but from everything I've heard Reader is a good dude and well thought of in wrestling circles. I think he would have an opportunity on a lot of staffs.

Back to high school state tournaments. The brackets for California's state tournament is out. I'll link the brackets from Flo when they come out. It doesn't look like Daniel Herrera will be challenged much until the finals when he'll most likely get Zach Limon who Flo has ranked #18 at 285. Herrera beat Limon 4-3 back in January at the Doc B semifinals

I know crapping on Bono is a bit of favorite past time around here (often for good reasons) but the Askren/Bono thing definitely is a two-sided problem and is more than just an old recruting beef from Ben's high school days.

At this point those two giant egos will never reconcile. Makes Bono’s job extra difficult because he won’t get any top instate talent. Doesn’t affect Askren any because he can keep cranking out elite youth talent and funnel them away from UW to wherever (Mizzou typically!). Which IMO is a disservice to those kids but he won’t see it that way.

It seems as easy as fire Bono but Askren had issues with Barry Davis before that, so unless you’re hiring Ben (they’ve tried that and he said no) or specifically picking a coach based on him, you’re in a tough spot.

I've seen other coaches screw the pooch like Bono did. Where other coaches can overcome this is by publicly and privately congratulating the wrestlers they snubbed and say they were wrong and are happy for them. That isn't in Bono's DNA to do something like that though. Hopefully Bono learned a major lesson there, don't ever totally write off a wrestler, if you aren't as interested, you just don't offer as much in scholarship money or ask them to walk on.

I agree, but again I think the high school stuff is completely overblown as the cause of friction between AWA and Wisconsin.

It’ll take a miracle (or an even larger slush fund than what PSU has) for any program to get where Cael has Penn State. They might lose a year every now and then (Iowa 2 years ago), but Penn State will consistently win 2 to 3 titles every 4 years as long as Cael is there. I just hope KD can keep building the program to be consistently top 6-8 and maybe get hot one year and catch them

I would be happy if ISU consistently finished top 5, with trophy years sprinkled in. Of course if they win a title I’ll be ecstatic. Penn State is a machine right now. Who wouldn’t want to go there if they wanted you. You have tons of opportunities to get way better in that room and with the Nittany Lion club guys

Beat me to it. Askren and Bono hate each other. Ben was the wisconsin RTC coach after Bono got hired and that lasted no time at all. Egos and differences in philosophies largely behind it. To be fair Askren also had a salty relationship with Barry Davis before Bono.

So even though he’d say he doesn’t do it, all the top wisconsin prospects (and they virtually all wrestle at AWA) are pushed away from UW and have been for years. It sucks because AWA has upped the talent level in this state so freaking much. O’Toole, Mocco, Messenbrink, Keckeisen, Whiting, Sinclar, Mirasola(s), etc. You could build a hell of a squad around Wisconsin kids, granted they are all middle and upper weights!

Not much UW can do to change it unless they hire a coach that Ben actually gets along with lol

What about hiring Ben?
