He’s a freak athlete, so who knows, but it seems unlikely he’d be able to pull both off at a high level. Can someone think of another example of this happening at a power 5?
He would miss a majority of spring football practices while focusing on wrestling, and spring football is where a lot of gains are made for players that expect to be in the 2-deeps. I would guess that before the end of his redshirt freshman year, he will choose one or the other

Mark Sindlinger (Iowa) and more recent Josh Hokit (FSU) not Power 5 but D1.

I was talking to a coworker about this yesterday and those were the only two we could come up with.

The two best examples I can come up with for big time wrestlers that ended up being stud NFL guys were Haselrig and Neal, and neither of them played football in college. That spurs the conversation about what kind of freak athletes those dudes were.

Without Jesuroga I’m sure T&T are praying they Kueter doesn’t decide to hang it up and play football only. That recruiting class would take a massive hit.

Meanwhile Penn State gets commitments from the Mirasola’s. Good lord no one is going to be able to close that gap anytime soon.

Talk about a shot in Bono's you know what... Wisconsin has been striking out HARD instate with zero competition to go against.

You’re not kidding. Took a look through the high school rankings, a lot of really good Wisconsin kids going everywhere but Wisconsin. If they don’t get Hopke then that’s a complete recruiting failure.

Every day. Take the 160 pound class. After Christmas you get 2#. Then each day after Wednesday you get another pound. So the 160 guys had to make 165.0 today.
Just plowing through the thread, was at the tournament all last week. There is a max of 2 extra #’s. The kids got an extra the first 2 days. 160 class got to a max of 164.

It’ll take a miracle (or an even larger slush fund than what PSU has) for any program to get where Cael has Penn State. They might lose a year every now and then (Iowa 2 years ago), but Penn State will consistently win 2 to 3 titles every 4 years as long as Cael is there. I just hope KD can keep building the program to be consistently top 6-8 and maybe get hot one year and catch them

It doesn't help that a lot of the best kids from Wisconsin are AWA kids, and Askren doesn't have the best relationship with Bono

Beat me to it. Askren and Bono hate each other. Ben was the wisconsin RTC coach after Bono got hired and that lasted no time at all. Egos and differences in philosophies largely behind it. To be fair Askren also had a salty relationship with Barry Davis before Bono.

So even though he’d say he doesn’t do it, all the top wisconsin prospects (and they virtually all wrestle at AWA) are pushed away from UW and have been for years. It sucks because AWA has upped the talent level in this state so freaking much. O’Toole, Mocco, Messenbrink, Keckeisen, Whiting, Sinclar, Mirasola(s), etc. You could build a hell of a squad around Wisconsin kids, granted they are all middle and upper weights!

Not much UW can do to change it unless they hire a coach that Ben actually gets along with lol

Oh without a doubt you nailed it. Maybe my point should have been more directed at the university for seeing these top tier kids in state get out because their head coach made on dumb ass move with Ben back a few that they are paying for yet today.

The Paulsen's were being recruited by ISU. Askren wanted to come to ISU and came up to Bono while at a meet or something. Bono told Ben that he wasn't good enough to come to ISU and that we didn't want him.
I first heard that story sitting around the hotel lobby over cocktails at NCAAs back in the late '00s. It doesn't get any less painful when I hear it now. I use the phrase "that's the most ISU thing ever" a lot/too much, but THAT REALLY IS the most Iowa State thing ever. Slot Ben in at 174 and Max in at 184/197 to go along with the Paulsons and Backes and we win at least two team nattys, not to mention the absolute monster recruiting pipeline we'd have now.

Fml.
