High School Sports Thread

Back in 6 on 6,if you wanted to recruit you offered the dad a janitor job. Mediapolis did that.

I think I said it in the HS football thread but it feels like teams are either elite, decent, or so bad that any decent team just needs to show up to win by 40. Not much in between.

I feel like back when I played (90s) even the bad teams that might be 3-6 would still have a couple of guys that could make things tough and even if you were decent you needed to at least play well to win convincingly.
I think this is the trend for all sports. Iowa is churning out more high level players in most sports than ever, but those kids are concentrating on the top teams.

I mean if there were starters or role players from other schools getting PT that came from other schools, it be pretty easier to prove.
I don’t follow it closely but their D1 post player last year played at North then OE to Johnston.

I don’t know how much is active coaches recruiting or kids recruiting each other through travel ball.

My kids high school is 5A and they had 8 sophomores go out last year. Meanwhile I think they had 50+ kids go out for golf. The time commitment and physicality of football is a tough sell if a kids heart isn’t all the way in it

I agree with this. Our school is 5A and a traditional power, as well, and cross country and golf teams were over 100 boys, I don’t know exact numbers. Kids don’t want to put in the time and work especially if they have no hope of playing. My youngest isn’t going out junior year because he knows he won’t play much if at all. He is small and there are kids that are better. The coaches wouldn’t be screwing him over in his case.

Another problem is club sports, my youngest wrestles and he pretty much is competing or practicing most of the year between free and folk style. You have that in volleyball, hoops etc. it has really improved the level of kids participating but it’s hard to find time for other sports. And it’s especially hard to compete in other sports at a high level.

Sorry, but kids aren't going out for cross country because they don't want to put in the time and work...

I'm not sure I would share a link that lists her birthplace as Johnston.
She first started playing at Urbandale her first couple of years then transferred to JHS. The post player that followed her (Jenkins at Va Tech) played at North then transferred.

Clarion gutted Webster City wrestling team. Bought the family a house. 3 brothers that are all possible state champions.
They took two forest city wrestlers at the same time. Dan has been doing this for a long time. Now that Morgan has his kid going through, he’s back to doing it again.

Are you saying they bought the family a house for small town high school wrestling? I’m not saying it didnt happen, but why? No one cares.

Not sure about the current ones, but in the past they would just get to live there, it wasn’t bought for them. My sons best friend was just offered cash, but he didn’t go there.

Compared to the private schools, it a fraction of the number of kids. Private schools have way too much influence in winning championships, and it needs to be curbed. But don't worry private school supporters, the state will never step up and do what is needed to help the public schools, hell they are more likely to do the opposite.
I am not up on what goes on at my old high school. But, if a 4* QB is across town would you go after him? That young QB decided to follow his coach to PSU.

You are comparing a college athlete that is going to get paid a few million to follow his coach, and a high school player across town. One is perfectly legal, while the other is against the high school rules in Iowa.

As much as we do not like it, the best players are going to search for the best programs, even in high school.

The local lady parts doctor apparently likes the Clarion wrestling program. The team is bought and paid for.

Hypocritical part is that the the talk is they turned in the Humboldt HWT who moved from fort dodge because Ross moved up into his weight. Clarions HWT couldn’t beat him so they found a way to make him ineligible.

I guess what we have learned today is that there are quite a few covert private school systems in Iowa because everyone knows real public schools don't do this type of stuff, right?

Oh wait......this just in:

As much as we do not like it, the best players are going to search for the best programs, EVEN IN HIGH SCHOOL.

I guess that clears it up. Everyone DOES do it.

Well unfortunately you’re wrong. Transfer rules were changed in Iowa and you can basically open enroll anywhere.
