Heacock Rumor/Speculation

Gotta be fake, or at least hoping so :-)

Not saying this is not true, but this random X user with a few hundred followers, half of which are probably bots, does not exactly scream "well sourced".

It very well could be true. It is coming sooner than later, but this is not a source I would put much faith in.

He's retiring, if I'm wrong please keep receipts and call me out in a couple months.

On a positive note, when's the last time a high level coach (head in any sport or OC/DC) hung it up while in Ames? Fennelly of course will eventually, prior to that Orr is all I can think of and that was 30 years ago.

Orr didn’t hang them up.

I’m fine if Heacock retires and Broomfield takes over, heck even if he steps back next season into a senior advisor/analyst role to mentor Broomfield for a couple of years. He’s certainly earned it at this point. If this season is his last ride or not, I hope they announce it in advance or bring him back the first game next season to send him off right- similar to how they sent Doc. Greenwald and Wendy off on Saturday.

The timing does seem right and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him stay around in an analyst or advisory role. Broomfield, Veight, or Rasheed would seem to be the options. It feels like Eli is happy to be a d-line coach under Campbell because he has done it for so long now, but you have to make sure you don’t lose him in the transition.

TBH, this is probably the best situation for ISU long term. Retire and name your successor while also being around to support the transition any way you can. It also creates a needed break (IMO) to the style and schemes that Heacock has run as the conference has moved away from the air raids that he was known for stopping. Bring in a new face to the program while celebrating what Heacock has done for you. It’s the perfect situation that ISU never seems to get as so few coaches have stepped down on their own terms.

??? I was only 2 for his final season but I thought he retired for health reasons
Johnny wanted to stick around for at least one more year for the senior class he had. But Gene Smith thought it was a good time to get a new coach because the new coach would have a solid core of a team to start with while he brought in his new players. I got this information from a source that could not be better.

I got it from Johnny himself.

This is a tweet from a gentleman named Blair Harris. He’s always trying to be the one who “had it first,” and is wrong about what he says 80% of the time.
It’s kind of amazing to me how many people took it as gospel truth, like it was an ISU press release.

He is 9 weeks older than I am. Being 65 is whatever you want. Work, play, family, travel. He’s definitely earned it. Best DC is ISU history. Hope he doesn’t go to another team though.
Most valuable assistant coach in the history of ISU athletics. Im not counting Otz since most of his impact is as a HC.

No coach has gotten more out of the talent he has, and it really isn’t close.

I hope he sticks around for a couple more years, but a true transition to Broom or someone else would be a good consolation if Heacock retires.

In the post game interview with Harklau yesterday, Campbell praised Broomfield and said he is one of the best defensive coaches in the country.
I noticed this as well! Seemed kinda obvious. I’m all for it, big fan of Broomfield who is a smart dude and has learned alot from Heacock no doubt.
