Hey- sorry this is off topic from your original question, but I am in the market for a new LCD 120hz tv, mind if i bug you on which one you picked and why?

As far as HDMI cables, I've heard that it doesn't matter. I bought a pack of 2 6' for 5 bucks awhile back knowing I was going to buy a HDTV but haven't used them yet obviously.

Samsung Touch of Color series is great. I love my 46". Samsung makes outstanding LCDs.

As far as refresh rate, 120 is plenty.

Plasma's have a problem with screen glare if you have no light control. On the other hand Plasma's look much better in angled situations when you're not directly in front of the TV. People like myself have both LCD's and Plasma's in our house so we can compare. In truth, I'd be more worried about getting a good brand.
My 2 favorites are:

Plasma
Panasonic

LCD
Samsung

Also keep in mind that when you display SD programming they are all going to look like crap.

We picked up a 46" Samsung, 120Hz for around $980 a couple of weeks ago from Sears. It was on a pretty good sale and then they gave us 10% off if we used our Sears card. It ended up that we got the 46" for the same price that I saw the 40" elsewhere.

BTW, Best Buy has a 46" Samsung LED in their Black Friday ad for $1500 if you want to sit there for 8 hours before the doors open.

Anyone ever have any luck with these Black Friday "major" ticket items?

From what I've heard - they advertise these great deals for instock itmes only, no raincheck - then often have like 5 on hand.

As far as Cheap HDMI cables go i caution people to purchase them, here very shortly they are releasing the newest version V1.4 which include support for ethernet, an audio return channel, 3D and few other things. With the cheaper cables now wont be able to handle the change but most of the high performance cables will.

As a general rule, since I would guess most people on this board watch a lot of sports, I would stick to at least a 120Hz on an LCD. Plasma does not have an issue with motion blur, so get whatever plasma you want.

As for resolution, at 42" or less if you are sitting a normal distance away, 720p will cover you, save the money. On the larger sets, take advantage of the 1080. Also, as others have mentioned, if you will do a lot of off angle viewing, look at a plasma. It doesn't fade when you sit off center like an LCD will.

In regards to black friday deals, I actually managed to get one from Best Buy on their website. I think it was one of the all day ones and not the door busters, but it was much easier than sitting out in the cold for 8 hours. They delivered for free as well. I had it in about a week.

Generally if you shop around, you can find some deals that are comparable (sometimes even better) to the BF deals. IMO it's not worth it to go out on BF, for a number of reasons.

I would say by the time any of these features are common enough that you have a need for them, you will be able to go buy the 1.4 cables for $10 online as well. Keep in mind that you would also need a TV and a media player that would support these features for it to even matter. If your current equipment doesn't support this stuff, why pay a premium for a cable that will?

I got a free one from mediacom and my brother who works at graybar said he could get a nitrogen injected pair for 12.00 which normally cost $45 and i can not tell the difference so no the more expensive ones probably last a little while longer but who knows

Back to the TV topic for a moment... anyone have any experience with LG LCD TV's?

I've been looking at getting a new TV - I dont think I have a dark enough room for Plasma and am more of a PC games person anyways, so I think LCD will be better than Plasma for me. I'm looking for something 1080p/120hz.

LG seems to be a bit cheaper than Sony or Samsung, but the ones I've seen looked fine (I had a nice one in a hotel I particuarly enjoyed... they've looked fine in best buy)

Any good reasons to take the more expensive brands over the upper mid-range brand?

I know when LG made plasma they were some of the best and I've been happy with LG in general for other products I've bought. Keep in mind that besides Samsung, LG makes a lot of the LCD panels for other companies and then they slap their name/software on them. I would consider LG just as good as Sony.

That is also the deal currently if you head to the BB in Ankeny. Cheapest used Samsung LED on Amazon is 1571.00

When I was researching ours, there were some pretty good reviews for LG. They were a little critical about the brightness, but had good things to say about the colors. From what I found the Samsungs had the best contrast out of any brand. This isn't really that important if you are putting it in a basement, but I was putting this in a fairly bright room. So, if you don't care about the contrast then the LG will probably do well for you.

Be aware, the 500 series samsungs are 60Hz. Really the prices on the LCD's aren't that great. In fact, the LN46B650 from Sears is cheaper right now on their website than that price listed. (http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_...lectronics&cName=Televisions&sName=Flat+Panel)

This is the one that we ended up with.
Samsung 46 in. (Diagonal) Class 1080p 120Hz Touch of Color™ LCD HD Television ENERGY STAR®
Also, look for when Sears is doing their additional 10% off when you use your Sears card. That's a great deal when you consider the traditional sales that go on these things.

I wasn't impressed with LG. I had bought a 32LG70 and didn't think much of it compared to my Sony Bravia 32XBR6. I think the contrast was much greater in the Sony, but they were at the same pricepoint.

When I was shopping last year, it always seemed to come down to Sony and Samsung for who had the best picture in LCD. If I'm not mistaken Samsung made the LCD boards for Sony. Panasonic is the way to go for Plasma.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I will have to pay attention to the contrast ratios next time I window shop (I want to buy a new TV... but it'd be easier for me to afford it if I'd quit flying out to Cyclone games )
