I think that assumption generally is about any that would have the technological ability to visit us, especially visit us repeatedly. Undoubtedly life exists (or has existed) elsewhere in the universe at technological levels both higher and lower than us.
I don't think people appreciate just how much more advanced than us a civilization like that would have to be. The energy generation requirements alone would be higher than we can even fathom, and likely would require completely new understandings of physics. That level of difference isn't like the difference between people of today and people of a hundred years ago. Its more like people of today and ants. Which would mean we would most likely be completely uninteresting to them anyway. They certainly wouldn't be coming here to conquer us for any reason- if there were any danger it'd be because our planet possessed some kind of resource being mined and we were simply viewed as not much more than ants to them.
As long as you weren’t naked, I don’t think barefoot is the part to be worried about.
Think about this, of the billions of stars and billions of potential planets that are millions and millions of light years away, what are the chances life on one of those would find the Earth.
Read the bible some time. From the time I was old enough to understand what they were yammering about, they (organized religion) have said God created man and earth and life was earth centric.
But you're probably right because religion will shift its dogma to accommodate the facts at hand, just as they always have.
What if they have their own religions that say a bunch of **** too to attempt to explain their origins?
It always ends well.
If anything it would make Christians open their mind a bit. I for one would really hope disclosure comes out fully within the next 20 years. Whether by our own government or some mass showing where it makes it clear that something is out there.
I also think the population is likely more ready than it ever will be for some knowledge other life out in the universe. I assume a lot of people will think it’s pretty awesome, others will think “cool” and shrug it off and continue to go about their daily life. Highly doubt any mass riots will happen with any type of disclosure.

Really, the biggest piece of technology that we need to learn from the aliens is just how they are able to perform all these anal probes without the need for prep. We need to take that technology and apply it to colonoscopies. As I’m getting older, this seems like the thing that will benefit me the most.
Had a boss that in a former stage of his career worked for one the big defense contractors in the 80s. All he would say about it was “I can’t talk about the things they had going on, but people aren’t imagining things when they think they see UFOs.”
