Harbaugh

Iowa fans getting their hopes up

I was always taught the Midwest had a "Great Lakes" (e.g., the "Old Northwest") and a "Great Plains" (acquired in the Louisiana Purchase) with the Mississippi River serving as the border between the two.

But that is all "Midwest" to me -- starting in Youngstown, Ohio and ending somewhere along the Platte.

Luke Fickell already had his chance at Ohio State and it went really badly. I get that he was put in a tough situation, but that would be really hard to sell OSU fans on if Day leaves I would think.

I'm more concerned with Ped State job... If they steal Campbell, it may be time for Cyclone nation to burn down Happy Valley.

ISU is not going to pay $6 to $7 mill for a football coach. However, if they start paying Campbell the Ferentz kind of money, that would help. He's better and more deserving than Ferentz anyway.

Then what it boils down to is if Matt wants to stay in Ames and have his own legacy (Snyder, Fry, etc), or does he follow the benjamins?

What do you mean, “if”? He’d been repeatedly and blatantly clear about what he wants.
I hope he does stay and raise his family here, too. He's already in the Power 5. He can be the next Big 12 coach that sticks for a long time because it's the proper fit.

Not sure the money is the deciding factor for Michigan but rather can BigBlue convince CMC that AnnArbor is the best fit for him.
I think it comes down to what Campbell values. Does he like the environment with the ISU AD? Does Matt and his wife like raising their kids in Ames? Hope so.

Campbell would be an excellent cultural fit at Michigan. There is no better fit for them as far as that is concerned. They have substantial other challenges, though:

They're cheap. They almost lost Howard because they lowballed him. The only reason that wasn't an issue with Harbaugh is because it was so obviously a slam dunk hire at the time, they could publicly get away with it.

They do this weird thing where they hire guys and then behind closed doors want them to change if they do things they don't like like Harbaugh.

They're scared to death of guys outside of the Michigan family and there are no "Michigan Men" out there that would be a candidate.

They think they're on OSUs level when they're actually more in line with Notre Dame so 9-3 or 8-4 seasons here and there aren't beneath them like they think.

The academic side will NOT compromise to get more talent. It's not a huge deal but when you're talking about 1-2 kids per year that's 6-10 starting spots and it is something.

They don't have a very good AD IMO. The Howard search was a bit of a mess. They ended up fine with that and hockey but both of them were obvious candidates from the start and that just isn't out there right now.

I don't know what they'll do. From what I've heard, there'll be an extension coming but it's going to be uncomfortable since the program seems to be toxic at this point. I see no way it gets better under Harbaugh as he's just not the guy they hired. He was for a couple years but something has happened and they just have a toxic mess that won't get better.

My observation as an outsider is that if you’re their coach and you’re not a “Michigan Man,” your leash is shorter than it otherwise would be.

If you click on this link watch the video (don't worry about the article) at 3:40 mark of video they discuss Campbell to Michigan. Pete Thamel believe Campbell would be the top choice right now (doesn't think Fickell would take Michigan job).

People with power at UM undermining Rich Rodriguez was a very, very real thing. Then they got Hoke who was far worse. I have defended Harbaugh because at the end of the day, it didn't seem like they had a good chance at up-grading. Now it seems so bad that's not the case anymore. It's one thing when your floor is 8-4 or 9-3 but they could very well win one game this year. That's pretty realistic and I don't see there being improvement at all.

The thing about Ped State that would concern me is that Rutgers has a capable coach (once again).
If Schiano can keep New Jersey kids from going there, that makes life a little more difficult.

There was a really good article on ESPN prior to the weekend game about how it's most likely to play out.

Basically came down to either he walks away on his own accord or they extend him. The belief is they will do anything not to fire him, and short of losing out, will likely have to extend at least 2 years. The last thing they want for recruiting purposes is for him to be going into the final year of his contract with no clear future.

Personally, I think he's most likely to go back to the NFL after this year to save face and retain his legacy at Michigan.

Seems like a lot of the bloom would be off that rose but it is the NFL I guess. So wash, rinse, repeat.
