The guy was always a odd fit. Looked like someone’s grandfather.
They just made the Big 12 championship game last year, were a 3 seed, made the Sweet 16 and had the #1 ranked defense in college basktball last year.He would still have been there if he won enough games. It was the losing record for Tech
Just like with Mike Leach and Marsha Sharp. Tech likes to do this.My Tech coworker says they were just looking for any reason to push him out.
Syracuse also opening up. I could see Fran splitting to get back out east.He will hold out for Iowa and wait until Fran takes the ND job.
Even in Beard's best years, the roster was a revolving door after a nucleus of 4-5 guys. Their end of bench type guys and freshmen who didn't play much were always leaving the program, and last year we saw them start to lose starters and even stars in McCullar and Shannon. The writing has been on the wall for awhile with Adams IMO. I think Beard would have worn out his welcome eventually too. Whoever the next hire is, they need someone with a little more character and backbone.I don't think Tech is going away. With the money and facilities they have, I could see them spending a lot for a splashy hire, or opening up the NIL checkbook to get talented transfers. Plus, they have a good nucleus of young talent there, if they stay.
Why would he leave for anywhere that might have anything resembling accountability?Syracuse also opening up. I could see Fran splitting to get back out east.
I think there were enough boosters who probably never liked the hire to begin with, and when he started losing players last offseason and losing games this year, it didn't take much to pay him to leave. He would still have been there if he won enough games. It was the losing record for Tech
Their hiring committee better be boning up on character assessment, because their record is not good. See Tuberville, Knight, Tubby, Gillespie, Beard, et al.Whoever the next hire is, they need someone with a little more character and backbone.
I thought Syracuse named that Autry as his replacement? I didn't think the job would be open.Syracuse also opening up. I could see Fran splitting to get back out east.
Good question. Although Boeheim survived for a long time at Syracuse by and large to his championship in 2002. That bought him a ton of good will there, even though he never really got Syracuse back to that level. I'm thinking they already named a replacement for Boeheim though, IIRC.Why would he leave for anywhere that might have anything resembling accountability?

Also pressure from boosters as he makes a ton and the team has been unimpressive.I don't think what he said was great, but not bad enough to be fired. This has been building for a while with other things going on (like spitting on a player). I also get the feeling Tech was looking for a reason to get rid of him too.
There was more to it than that. National guys like Fran have alluded to problems inside their program without directly stating what it was. They just made the Big 12 championship game last year, were a 3 seed, made the Sweet 16 and had the #1 ranked defense in college basktball last year.
A bad month in January wasn't going to get him fired.
Ken Trickey protégé, I'd bet.Rumors are Grant McCasland from UNT and Paul Mills from Oral Roberts are the frontrunners. The ORU guy runs an up-tempo offense, which would be interesting in the Big 12.
