My son is thinking about going out for golf next year as a freshman. He’s basically played a few times and that’s it.

Was thinking about getting some lessons for him this summer, I don’t play. I don’t think he expects to play the tournaments but I don’t want him to be terrible, that’s no fun.

Any recommendations in the Des Moines/Ankeny areas?

My son goes to Ken Schall and likes him and his staff a lot.

For what it’s worth my son decided summer before freshman year he wanted to be on the golf team and he loved it all four years, even though the beginning was a bit rough.

Really smart to get lessons. I was a pathetic hack before I took them. Wish someone had suggested them for me when I was in 6th grade starting to play. I live in Omaha so can’t help on specific instructors, but you’re doing the right thing and there’s a world of difference between a great instructor and an average one.

The ISU Men’s golf team used to do traveling clinics. Really good. Not sure they’re still doing that. My former BIL, a Hok fan, said it helped his game more than anything else he’d done.

Lori Burmeister is really good. I can look and see where she’s at, but she was at Des Moines golf and country after the golf dome closed in Johnston. She could give lessons to nonmembers. She played at the University of Georgia and high school at Valley I believe. She’s an awesome person and a great teacher. I’m friends with her husband and I can ask if you’re interested?

I agree, Lori is great! My kids took lessons with her at the old dome, Willow and Glen Oaks during their Junior PGA and high school golf. Ken is very good also as is Sam Rice who teaches there.

There are a lot of local tournaments during the summer, (IowaPGAJuniorGolf.com) might be worth checking one out to get some experience. FYI, on the boys side they can fill up pretty fast.

I took lessons from Sarah Ward at West Grand Golf about 10 years ago
She was really patient and good for a beginner

Only thing I’d be careful of is club pros who may not want to teach a beginner. I won’t say who, but I took lessons from a club pro and could tell he didn’t want teach from the beginning.
He was more like swing fix/tweak type lessons, not starting from scratch

Second that for Sarah Ward. I've known her forever and have taken numerous lessons from her. You are spot on, she is the most patient pro I've been around, and she's helped me enjoy and improve (or fix) my game for decades. She's the best around.

Tom Tays at Otter Creek. My son went to him when he was just getting started and it did wonders for his game. Very patient and excellent for beginners.

Dated a girl in college that was taking golf lessons. First time on the course she got stung by a bee. She told the instructor about it and he inquired as to where she got stung. She told him "between the first and second hole". His suggestion was that she close her stance.

My wife and I took couples lessons from him last summer. I went from horrible to bad. Just even a couple adjustments can work wonders. I'm still very inconsistent so will be getting another round here soon.

Screw lessons. Clench your cheeks and swing as hard as you can. Let God take care of the rest.

I would've killed that ball, but Jesus made me miss

I had a coach. Still sucked when I played, but I looked like a golfer before I'd swing and my putting is much much better.

The best coaching tip was, "KnappShack, you play golf. You don't work golf. Have fun"

Of course I stopped playing immediately when I stopped having fun, but that is great advice for live.

Legacy in Norwalk has a pro that gives lessons. I took some from him and seems pretty knowledgable. But whoever you go to he needs to practice what they teach him. Hit a golf range every chance he has.

I don’t have a recommendation, but it’s important to have your son give you feedback. I do recommend an instructor and believe those mentioned above are solid - although I don’t know any of them. Different instructors do different things, so make sure your son feels confident and progresses with whom ever you choose. Read up and look on YouTube - Danny Maude is one instructor I like a great deal. Good luck, golf is a great sport for a lifetime.
