Game day in Ames

I kinda want a go early to check it out, but...there doesn't seem to be much to check out with it being so close to game time. That just means people are confined to their seats, right?

Surprisingly, this is not the first time that a Gameday host has played the game on ESPN+.

The March 7, 2020 game of George Washington @ #2 Dayton was on ESPN+.

The things Greenberg said in the article from Rob Gray are incredibly complimentary of ISU fans, our community and Hilton. I hope it proves true and the crowd is loud and involved from the tip tomorrow. He calls it "Deafening" among other things. I have seen Allen Fieldhouse and Hilton, and Hilton gets incredibly loud and deafening indeed, but AFH is consistently louder all the time in my opinion. Hope the crowd is up for it tomorrow to uphold the reputation. I don't think any of these big time announcers have been here for a non-big game and Hilton is quieter. Hope tomorrow bucks the trend led by the students!

I hope our crowd shows out for both game day and the game. KU and Arizona were both incredible environments. We need to be really good tomorrow and provide a great environment for our team.

I was just at AFH for the game Monday which was my first time there. They have a 15,300 capacity after their recent renovations which is about 1000 more than Hilton holds. I was 6 rows from the top and I felt much closer to the court than I do in Hilton in a similar angle in row 11 in the corner balcony. They definitely make AFH a hostile environment to play in as the crowd is engaged the entire time and they crank the music which feels louder than Hilton as it feels more like a gym than an arena like Hilton does.

That being said we still have a great home court advantage that is right up there with AFH that makes it one of the toughest places to win a road game. I've basically had season tickets since I was a freshman at ISU in 1998 and as an adult after graduation so over 25 years of being at a good chunk of home games at Hilton. Even in our worst years our fans still showed up and willed our team to some improbable wins and there are not many schools that have the track record that we do for home court advantage.

I wish we’d play the music as loud as they did at AFH Monday night but also understand that Jamie doesn’t need to respond to 6 374 emails from people complaining about how loud it is…

As an outsider looker (who hasn’t lived in Iowa in a long time)

Hilton, at its peak, against rivals, top ranked teams, during a run, games that feel big is a top 10 arena. Yet, maybe it’s tv, but it isn’t what it was. Hate to say it but from the tv it doesn’t feel like a top arena for the past couple of years unless there’s a big run.
