Pressure from whom (who? whomst? I dunno, I'm dumb). If he loses a few unreasonable message board fans, I don't think anyone will blink an eye. But maybe you're a big donor that the school can't afford to lose...I guess I'll guess that's not the case. Be well.

Edit: Sorry, I know I'm being a ****, woken up too early this morning. I just think there's a clear picture of what he's trying to build and there's no way we were making the tourney with Prohm (or anyone else for that matter next year) so I'm a little lost on some of the comments.

Well.... the thing TJ has going for him is that's it's nearly impossible for him to do any worse that Prohm..... TJ will find a way to win more than 2 games next year. I could luck into coaching ISU to more than 2 wins next year.

I just want to see better players and better x's and o's. TJ is known as a recruiter..... so I'm expecting to see an improved roster in year one of TJ than we had on the court last year. With all the transfers, that's not asking too much IMO.

But if we lose Bolton, JCL, and let's say Hinson doesn't end up coming back.... and Hunter decommits..... we likely will not have a better roster this year IMO. Maybe we will..... we'll have to see what TJ ends up bringing in.

But TJ will definitely have more pressure.... and JP will have even more pressure than TJ..... that this was the right hire. That's not even a question. You don't hire your good friend that nobody else in the country would have hired and not expect to have a ton of pressure on that decision.

What pressure? TJ succeeds or gets fired. Just like anyone else.

This is a great get. Welcome Gabe! I think some people need to realize that now, looking at the landscape, TJ was the best realistic option for ISU. Watching him run practice in that recent video was the most hyped I have been for ISU basketball in years. The guys were working hard AND having fun. Personally, I'm excited to watch recruiting again.

Eh...I just think he's on par with JCL and Bolton, more Robin that Batman. He'll look like a better signing if he's a 2nd/3rd type of option. If the staff can find at least another starter with the last two spots, GK will be a really nice fit.
Neither of those guys played consistent defense. Gabe is apparently known as a defender. You don't need guys that need the ball in their hands. You need guys that know what do to do when the ball is in their hands. It's apparent Otz is looking for "we" players and not "me" players.

Some fans have become almost cult like since the TJ hire. It’s really quite interesting to watch.

Well, we had the Orr cult and the Hilton Magic. Since Orr only Fred has reached cult status. Doogie, Morgan and Prohm all got the "burn the witch" status. Still nothing like the decades on the WBB side and Fennelly's cult-like following of old peeps.

Do agree 100% with your "quite interesting to watch" since the fans have sheathed their long knifes.

I would disagree on the pressure part - I would say it's the same as any coaching hire he would have made. And regardless, if he keeps Campbell and the football dollars keep flowing in Pollard can call his retirement date. And was just extended.

I don't disagree on the rest of your points. And I think getting Kalscheur proves he's going to be able to recruit the area - he just beat out MN and WI for a Minnesota kid which we haven't done since Royce I don't think. We'll see again shortly as it seems like Eli King is number two on our 2022 target list.

Well.... we didn't conduct a true "coaching search", and hired a guy nobody else would have hired because he was good friends with our AD.... so there's a LOT of pressure on TJ to be good right out of the box I'm afraid. JP created that pressure, not us.

I want TJ to succeed big time.... I'm rooting for him like crazy.... but he does have a ton of pressure on him due to the circumstances of his hire.
I’m tired of hearing about the lack of a “coaching search”. It comes down to two questions. What were the odds that the “coaching search” would have hired a different coach? What were the odds that the different coach would actually be better at ISU than TJ? We don’t know the answers to those questions, but I certainly don’t think either of those were likely. Both of those things have to be true to make a “coaching search” anything but a waste of time. Since it wasn’t likely, the optimal procedure would be to make the hire as quickly as possible, so that TJ could hire his staff and hit the recruiting trail as quickly as possible. The longer the job dangles, the less likely you are to keep a Tyrese Hunter, for example.

Maybe TJ won’t be a good hire; we won’t know for some time. But ultimately the guy in charge of any ”coaching search” is Jamie Pollard. Would you rather have Jamie’s hire or an unaccountable search firm’s hire? Obviously Jamie has a lot riding on the men’s basketball program because the whole AD does. If you were in Jamie’s shoes, friendship will not be the reason you hire the second biggest job in your department.

Let’s say there’s a major earthquake and California falls into the ocean... an EMP takes out our infrastructure...

Welcome, Gabe. You'll make Hilton shake. When you're rolling down I-35, be sure to stop here in Albert Lea and grab some Jake's Pizza. Cuz last few times in Ames years ago, Pizza PIt pizza in Ames ain't near what it was back in the early 80s...
