Friday OT: Surprise hobbies

I find sitting still sort of stressful, which is why I like to have hobbies - I think it's really personality-driven. While I can occasionally just plant and do nothing, I get restless after long. Volunteer work and hobbies fill those holes.

It's funny--if I camp I spend hardly any time at my actual camp because I don't do well just sitting there. Even if I'm car camping or whatever I need to get out for an evening walk/hike or paddle, etc.

My site is basically a spot to sleep and eat and I'm hardly there unless it's raining.

It is a bit further than 2 hours from NE Iowa (I think that is where you are) but I would highly suggest checking out the Indiana Sand Dunes off the South Shore of Lake Michigan. We had a great time hiking the dunes and enjoying the views of Lake Michigan. If you have the time, do the whole Lake Michigan loop through Wisconsin, upper and lower Peninsula Michigan, then Indiana (obviously there is an Illinois section of the lake but it is much more urban). There is a TON of great hiking, beaches, and mom & pop shops and restaurants (especially the more northern you go on the loop). If you enjoyed Door County, I would highly suggest going around the whole Lake.

You have already hit a lot of the areas I would have suggested otherwise.

Growing up, I was influenced by the humor of Gary Larson's Far Side and the writing style of Dave Barry. I started drawing single panel comics with the intent of putting my stuff in a newspaper someday. Fast forward to my adult life and the newspaper is all but dead. I stumbled on some of my old comics a few months back. Drawing is not my forte and it definitely shows on some of them. Still, some made me chuckle.

I have a goal someday to write and publish a book. If I get that done, I may just randomly throw in a couple pages of my favorite comics. It won't have anything to do with the book, but I'd still like to do it.

For road trips we always would get Dave Barry audio books. Even as a high school age kid I would laugh my *** off.

I remember that hill very fondly. I had to carry my 1 year old at the time while your feet sink back down the hill a few inches with every step. Loved the park, not that hill :D
