Friday OT - Nostalgic Cinema

Dazed and Confused here as well. That was our traditional end-of-schoolyear routine. Brings back the memories, that one.

First movie I remember seeing in the theaters was Batman. My parents took me, but didn't tell me what movie we were going to see. When the intro started, man, I was fired up. In fact, gotta post it here to get me through the end of the day!

Wow! Songs written and performed by Prince.

It’s kind of fun to read these since everyone is a different age.

Mine would be 9 to 5. I’m a little too young to have seen it when it came out. But my parents taped it off of TV in the mid 80s. And I wore the hell out of that tape. I loved that movie. I played “office” because of it. I was too sheltered to understand some of it. But parts of that movie—-the scene in the car with the body, especially, are some of the funniest movie scenes ever.

I liked a lot of the movies already mentioned, but I also loved watching really bad movies as a kid such as Krull, Conan the Barbarian, Clash of the Titans, Beastmaster, Willow, Killer Klowns from Outer Space, Critters, Goulies, Howard the Duck. The list goes on but those are ones I can think of.

Talk like that will get you put up on the Tree of Woe.

I am always looking for an excuse to post his gif. Cause Milla Jovovich and her bit part.

I much prefer Milla in Fifth Element.

I did not notice at first that you included Willow in your bad movies list. Winner tag rescinded.

This was the first movie I really remember seeing as a kid. I was just a hair too young to see it in the theater. It showed up on TV wen I was around 3 or 4 years old. (b. 1970) And I think I was probably just a little too young to grasp the film. A lot of it scared me. Augustus Gloop getting stuck in that pipe, that was frightening to me, probably because loved chocolate and could have seen that happening to me if I were there. The Boat ride?!?! Holy ****! That stuff can freak a little kid out.

And I remember asking my dad as we were watching it. What's up with Grandpa Joe? Guy is lying in bed his whole life and all of a sudden he can walk and dance just fine, was he just being lazy?

I have to say though, the opposite has happened with me. I've really come to love this movie. I think a lot of it is that I see the humor in it now that scared me as a young kid. And I think because it made such an impression on me, is why I am so fond of it and watch it quite often.

It couldn't be just about the fear aspect of it though. I saw the exorcist when I was too young as well, it scared the **** out of me and I've never cared to see that movie again.

I can relate to so much of this.

My spouse LOVES Wonka movie; when she stumbled upon it on TV, we keep it on until the end, even if sometimes it's just in the background. So I've seen it numerous times in recent years.

You mention your question about Grandpa Joe, reminds me of a comment by my stepdaughter when we watched the movie a few years ago, she quipped, "Old bastard lays around in bed for 30 years, now Charlie gets a Golden Ticket and all of a sudden he can dance? Whatever!" We all laugh remembering that.

Augustus in the tube and the boat ride both freaked me out, too, first time I watched it. Also, I felt empathy for Violet when she turned into a big blueberry.

Oh yeah, movies we watched a ton as a family were Swiss Family Robinson and It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad world.

Back in the early 80's when VCR's were still pretty new, I actually ordered this movie. It was Beta. I think it cost like $79.00. The idea of owning your very own copy of an actual movie was such a novel concept at the time.

That's $207.00 in today's money.

That's a crime!

A couple other Disney films I saw the theater were "Superdad" and "The World's Greatest Athlete."

Part of my deprived childhood. I never saw a single Disney classic animated movie as a child.

We did go to several of the Dean Jones Flubber and Love Bug movies with cousins as pre-teens so there was SOME level of Disney influence.

And of course the Sunday night television show "Wonderful World of Disney (In Living Color)"; whose impact was not so great - since we didn't get a color television until I was 17 years old.

Blasphemy! Willow was awesome!

Whoa, guys. I personally love all the movies I listed and think they're awesome. I included the "bad movies" part because they are all movies I either caught a bunch of crap for liking or movies you can find on "bad movie lists." No need for the verbal beatdown.

I, too, remember "The Wonderful World of Black-and-White Disney." :)

Sounds like our families made the move to color around the same period. I think it was 1973 when we got our first color set.

Big trouble in little China
Not my favorites, but are the two I remember most since my brother and I had different tastes in movies, but we'd always watch these together.

"Did you think we'd just walk in and out of here like the wind?!?"
"I thought that was your whole damn plan, Wang!"

I think I rented Big Trouble in Little China so many times I could have owned it 3 times over with the rental fees.

For us it was either Christmas '72 or '73. I think '72. It was a tube set when fully transistorized was pretty much the norm. It actually only lasted 2-3 years. Not a very reliable set nor a great picture. Either that, or we watched it way too much and it died to escape.

With you on wizard of oz for reasons you mentioned. Throw another vote for home alone. For some reason I thought I was older than Macaulay than me but in a wiki lookup I was thrown that we are the same age.

I think I understand where the timeline confusion may have come into play. "Home Alone" was released in 1990; "The Wizard of Oz" was shown annually on network TV from 1959-1991. So you must have watched "Oz" during the tail-end of syndication, and associate it closely with Home Alone timeframe.
