Friday 5: Big 12 expansion

Yes, we have multiple threads already, but it’s a hot topic and Friday 5 lets us compare priorities.

Rank your top 5 candidates for Big 12 expansion. Assume league is adding 4 schools. So #1 is who you’d invite first, etc. It's your first 4 and the top alternate.

To maintain focus, include only schools that are realistically attainable, right now; no P5-poaching Dream Lists.

Feel free to elaborate about your choices.

Since two defectors are rumored to want back in, are Colorado, Mizzou, A&M, and Nebby eligible?
 
My 5:
1. Cincinnati
2. BYU
3. Houston
4. Memphis
5. UCF

My gut says BYU at #1, but Cincy wants in ASAP, plus, the “regional partner for WVa†is pretty much a given, so I’d go there first. It’s more like 1a and 1b.

BYU seems willing to join, I can’t ignore its “brand" and notable football tradition. But possibility of football-only membership makes me hesitate. Two for all sports and two others football-only isn’t the worst thing, but whose the partner? Boise State? No thanks. Navy? Hmmm, maybe. (Notre Dame isn’t walkin’ through that door).

As for the rest, I could re-order it all day based using various criteria. I'll elaborate on some of that later.

UConn initially was about 4th, I’ve realized too many things are working against it and probably won't make the short-list.

What I'd like to see:
1. Nebraska
2. Missouri
3. Colorado
4. BYU
5. UCLA

What I think will happen:
1. Houston
2. BYU
3. Cincinnati
4. UCONN
5. CSU
 
How bout a poll?

Missouri (WVU traded to SEC)

If no Colorado/Mizzou:

BYU
Colorado State
Memphis
Cincinnati
Houston

**** traveling all they way to Connecticut or Florida. Morgantown & Provo is bad enough. I'd be shocked if Nebraska wanted back, but I'd take them in a heartbeat.
 
If the Wizard is correct:
1. Nebby

Assuming The Wizard's claims are merely talking to a former coach and have no credibility, then I want it:
1. Cincy
2. BYU
3. UConn
4. Houston
5. Memphis

Realistically, I won't believe that any defectors are returning until I see it. We'll likely add Houston, though if we're going the route of elevating schools I would much rather have Memphis over them.
 
Go big or go home. You try and power play it.

If no Power 5 want to come

5. BYU - Just not sure I want to deal with them.
 
My top 5 of candidates available:

1. Cincinnati - WVU basketball games and Texas Tech Football games would be must-see TV

2. UConn - they will inevitably land in a P5 conference. Desirable brand for both ESPN and FOX to broadcast, so would help with TV renegotiation.

3. BYU- brand, they put butts in the seats on game day, and they are competitive on the field.

4. Temple - "Rutgers"-type move going after Philadelphia market. Average home football attendance last year was just over 44,000, which is better than all other available candidates except BYU. Football team finished 10-4 last year with wins over Penn State, Cincy, Memphis and UConn, and losses to Notre Dame (by 4), South Florida, Houston (Conference Championship Game) and Toledo in their bowl game.

5. Memphis - Don't really care between them and Houston. Basketball program would be nice to have in the Big 12.
 
Since when and why does Colorado and Missouri want to come back to the Big 12? Even if they wanted to can they?
