i just shot a very nice buck. at least a 5x5 and maybe a drop tyne. think i hit a liver. how much penetration do you all think is needed for a sure kill? i sat in my stand for 2 hours and watched him bed down after the shot and he never moved. i left the timber at dark and will go back in the morning praying he's dead. my worry is that it didn't look like i got enough penetration. think i hit an inch or two ahead of center of his body. what say ye hunters-will he be dead tomorrow, or am i screwed?

Him bedding down quickly is a good sign. If you did hit the liver, he' s toast. But even if you didn't, the fact that you left him bedded and undisturbed at least gives you a shot to recover him. Good luck!

Did you check your arrow or find any blood? What color was it?Any bubbles in the blood?
What type of hair did you find?
Was it quartering away or quartering to?

An inch or two ahead of center should be a good shot.Was it a pass-thru?
What did he do after you shot him?
Did he mule kick and run or just slowly walk off with his tail down?

Where are you located and do you need help in the morn?

After rereading this and awaiting your resonse...it sure sounds like a liver hit to me but that is a bit farther back than the inch or two ahead of center.If he was quartering towards you...it could be because you have to consider the angle and exit hole.
With him bedding right away that soundslike a liver hit.
If he is able to leave his bed tonight and you lose blood...head for the nearest water.Please keep us updated and we'll try to help.

found him! about 50 yards from where he bed down. now the bad news:

coyotes ate most all of him!!!!

It's amazing what quick work they can do to a deer. My dad shot a doe a few years back and lost the blood trail I come the next day and see her in the middle of the field, the crows had already eaten her eyes and the coyotes and other vermin had already burrowed in her backside and ate most of her insides. Nice buck man, too bad you don't get the backstraps at least.

Hey, congratulations! He's a dandy.

The 'yotes are out of control. I killed a nice buck earlier this fall and was on him in less than an hour but the coyotes had already torn him up. We need to thin them out a bit.

Same thing happened to my cousin last night. He gut shot a for and wanted to leave her over night. I told him we oughta give her a few hours and go look. Sure enough, we found her this morning and a skunk had already gnawed her face legs and parts of her rump off.
