WI am not sure I can handle these posts about how bad of a recruiter/coach McDermott is when the basis for these comments are on two years of being at ISU. The program was "on the ropes" when he took over. Morgan appeared to have the program going down a path very few of us would want it to go.
These threads are like a bad accident. You can't help but look.
Didn't Cyfan13 say on here that Brackins was a Morgan recruit that just decided to follow what he felt after the coaching change? Also, Prioleau is the one responsible for Wes, and the last two have yet to suit up.
I still don't think you can make the claim that he's a quality recruiter with the number of big man targets we've absolutely whiffed on with it being such a need.
I still think Diante is a quality player, and I like the guys that he brought in, and he did have a hand in it, but his recruiting hasn't been anything special, especially if Brackins, as according to cyfan13, was coming here for Morgan.
Morgan recruited Brackins, as did McDermott at UNI, but Brackins was not coming to ISU because of Morgan, he came because he liked the place...he was unsigned and uncommited when Wayne was fired and Greg was hired...and he liked ISU, and knew of us thanks to Wayne...he also liked coach Mac, but wanted to play at a higher level than the Missouri Valley, so when Mac got hired here Brackins was one of the first players he went after...he is every bit a McDermott recruit...
I maintain that the claims of WM being an excellent recruiter is more of a myth than a fact. One simply has to take an honest look at the following list - Evanovich, Gray, Lee, Mardsen, Agnew, Chiraev, Davis, Faulkner, and George. This isn't the type of list that is going to produce deep tournament runs, let alone competitive records. Yes, I didn't include the smaller list of guys who could play and fit into a college environment. The problem is that the majority of our Big XII competition signed as good if not better level of talent during that 3 year period.
I guess if you leave out Blalock, Stinson, Taggert, Carr, Degand, Stinnet, Clark, and Westbrook I would agree that WM wasn't a very good recruiter.
Has anyone seen these players around campus? Do they look like they're enjoying themselves?
We belong to the best conference in the land in both football and basketball (Men and women) We are competitive with the best and I feel that stability will create a program that will beat the best.
Agree about the best conference, and definitely agree about needing stability...but in all seriousness, I dont think that we can say that we were "competitive" in the Big XII. We may have taken Texas to overtime on our home court, but we did finish in 11th place this year after finishing in the lower half last year. Just an objective assessment of where we are at...and I think we've got a ways to go.
.
Here are the facts as I see them:
1. Gmac has poor rapport with players and can't recruit, but he may have a systemized approach.
2. WM was a good assistant, has good rapport with players and is a good recruiter, but can't put it all together.
3. Some of LE's phenomenal success could be attributed to WM's help.
3. WM is currently unemployed and living in Ames.
The latest question is - Why not re-hire WM as an assitant to help in retention, training, recruiting? This would put an immediate stop to our tailspin. It requires both sides to swallow their pride for the good of the program.
